Frap Tools CGM Creative Mixer

Does anybody has tried this mixing system?
http://frap.tools/products/mixer/
So fetchingly surprised to discover a truly comprehensive modular system for mixing within the euro rack. At first glance, the only missing feature is a phase inversion button on the channel strip, though the direct out (yes, each strip features a pre/post fader direct out!) allows for managing this aspect on the main consolle… It is not a budget solution but it likely is made of quality components and shows plenty of features throughout 3 kinds of modules: the channel(s), the group(s) and the master.

The enterprise is from Italy, they also make a very unique function generator called Falistri

Hi, I have this mixer. 8 Channels, 3 Groups and 1 master. The feature set is really great and also usability has been well though through. A couple of remarks are however:
- draws a lot of power and also gets very warm
- I use it in a Doepfer base case in the bottom row. The input jacks collide with the top row and therefore it is not easy to patch the inputs when top row modules are patched as well
- In my case I also use a lot of FX modules and many of them are of course digital. They also draw a lot of power so I am having issues with noise/hum. I have been moving power connections to other bus boards but it is not perfect yet.
- The Send Return knobs are only Poti shafts, that makes it more difficult to control them

So, all in all I am very happy, due to the facts above I might be moving it to a own case.

Hi Alexander, thanks a lot for your reply, 8ch 3 subs is a huge system
I am not surprised that it requires a huge amount of mV but warming up is not good news
Did you troubleshoot enough in order to ascertain that heat and hum are due to the great power need ?
I am not sure whether the Doepfer base case you mentioned is the low cost case or not. If yes, I have learned from this list that it must be grounded. It features a floating ground, which reads no ground link to the earth. Before providing this link on that kind of LC cases I had both hum and sound leaks throughout the system modules. As for the jacks closeness to the top border, I am afraid that it can be found in several modules and it is one of the inconvenient counterparts deriving from the small euro sizes…
I cannot see what poti shafts means… (?)
And what about the sound quality of the VCA’s ?

Best regards, Diego

Hi Diego,

no, I did not do a lot of troubleshooting. The modules are in a Monster Base 168TE. Two PSU-2, all original by Doepfer. Only thing I did was to replug modules into different bus boards until hum went down to an acceptable level. As soon as I moved the Master module on a bus board with hardly anything else connected it became relatively silent.

But the modules still heat up a lot. I am not an electrical engineer, but I guess the power supplies/converters on the modules are dissipating too much heat. My concern is when adding more channels or groups what might happen. But atm that is not necessary as I use two Pragas as submixers.

Regards,
Alexander

Alexander thanks for your precious informations
The PSU2 apparently is not enough, it had been replaced with the PSU3, if I properly remember
Best, Diego
