Hello,

since there will be no web access to the group anymore, I created a simple archive of the group (and a few others I was moderator of):

http://www.florian-anwander.de/yahoo/

I will add a google search soon, but google did not send their bots until now.

Florian

I've posted this in a couple of groups I've belonged to, so I'll post it here too.

Personally, I will not be joining any facebook group, or signing up for facebook at all.

There has been a discussion in the YamahaDX Yahoo group about moving to groups.io, and the admin of that group has now started the process.

Fees start from zero, for upto 1GB. To transfer a group using their tools takes a premium account, whch is $220 per year, but a group can be downgraded after the first year, to a free one. It can probably be done manually though, apparently, with a free account.

groups.io has a fairly uncluttered user interface. A blind member of the YamahaDX forum said she found it okay for accessibility - unlike Google Groups. I suspect Facebook might be a problem for that too.

Here's a quote from the YamahaDX group, which I hope the author won't mind me reposting. It seems several related groups have already moved to groups.io:

"YamahaQY70AndQY100 has their Groups.io group up and running. Only 11 members so far. I’m not sure how big it is on Yahoo. VintageKorg is up with Polysix, Drums, MS-series and Tape subgroups. I believe MonoPoly will be added next. Poly800 is thinking about it.
The Polysix group did a GoFundMe to get the funds for a year of the premium service in order to get the migration tools to get everything from the Yahoo group. It took one day to get enough money. They started the new group as VintageKorg and made Polysix a subgroup...

I would also not be participating in a group on Facebook’s website, and also hope for something more open like groups.io <http://groups.io/>.

Hello

ok, then I will establish a group at group.io. I won't do the message / file transfer as we have the archive (which I will put also to the files-section at groups.io). If someone takes the effort to backup all the files from the filesection (or at least the ones, which look worth to keep): you're welcome.

founding the group will take a little time, as groups.io has an approvement process for new groups, which is flooded at the moment of course.

I will post here when the new group has been established and approved.
You will then have to subscribe there (simple sending a mail to +subscribe@...
The membership will not require approving, but the first posting of each member has to be approved by the moderators.

Regards
Florian

Can we not just stay here? Also, people like Dieter and Christian from Doepfer are vital to any Doepfer group.

That's great. Thanks, Florian.

The last few replies seem to have arrived out of order, as often happens on Yahoo.

FWIW, I was able to subscribe to the groups.io group I've joined already, by just visiting the page for it on their website, and pressing a button to fill in a short form.

The process isn't quite what I'm used to in forums, but then it's not a forum - it just has some of the features of one.

Initially, it just asks for your email address, and sends you a validation link. Once you've been approved for a group, you get to set a display name for that group.

So, you could belong to multiple groups, each with a different display name, or to do it the normal way, you'd just have to fill in the name you want to use, in the profile for each group. I guess joining a second or third group is best done through the website, while logged in.

That did confuse me a bit, but now I know, it seems simple enough to do.

If you log in to groups.io, it shows your email address near top right, because that's your id for the site, but it's not shown to anyone else.

Dear Florian,

I really appreciate your support in this regard. I'll definitely participate and join the new group.

Kind regards

P.S. But I'll not take part in Facebook. Maybe that's an old-fashioned view but I have reasons for this decision.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Re: No Files on yahoo-groups anymore...

2019-10-29 by Florian Anwander

Hello Everybody,

meanwhile the group has been created. The online site is:

https://groups.io/g/Doepfer-A100

The addresses for the mail-handling are:
  • Post: Doepfer-A100(at)groups.io
  • Subscribe: Doepfer-A100+subscribe(at)groups.io
  • Unsubscribe: Doepfer-A100+unsubscribe(at)groups.io
  • Group Owner: Doepfer-A100+owner(at)groups.io
  • Help: Doepfer-A100+help(at)groups.io

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: the group name had to be changed from Doepfer_a100 to Doepfer-A100 (groups.io does not allow underscores in group names).

The subscription and the approvement works a little bit different to yahoo. Subscribing does not require an approvement by the moderator as long as the account is used as read only account.
But the first message posting has to be approved by the moderator. This means that the first message you will be posting to the group will appear with some delay, because I have to approve it first.
After this procedure you will be also able to add files, calendars, wiki entries and what else. This means: you first have to post a message (and it has to be approved).

There is no transfer of data from the yahoo group to groups.io, neither messages, nor files, nor accounts. So you have to subscribe to the new group yourself. Simply send a mail to: Doepfer-A100+subscribe(at)groups.io

Best regards
Florian

If anyone wants to set how their name is shown, in a group, the procedure (when logged in) is:

Click your email address, at top right - this is only shown to you, not to others, and is your actual login ID for groups.io.

Click Account, on the menu that pops up.

Click Identity, on the left.

You can now click Edit next to each group you belong to, to set the "display name". They don't all have to be the same.

There's also a display name for your account, which I assume will be used as a default - I'm not sure.

Apparently, if you don't set one, and reply to the group by email, it will show your name as it appears to others when you send an email, or failing that, the first part of your email address, before the @... You might not want that. Also, if a lot of people only show their first name, that might get confusing.

None of this was immediately obvious to me, so I thought I'd share what I've learned.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
