a112 sound examples

a112 sound examples

2005-08-31 by selfoscillate

hello,

a few weeks ago patrick requested granular type sound
examples made with an a112, so here they come.

i understand that people want to use the a112 as a
granular device, so just to be clear about it,
the a112 is not a granular device.
it is just a monophonic 8-bit sampler/wavetable vco
with only two parameters, so you can't do real
granular synthesis with it, but you can apply
very basic granular techniques, when the a112 is
in wavetable mode, in order to mimic a granular
device. the results are often very lo-fi and have
not much in common with stuff generated
with reaktor or dedicated granular software.

1.

ok, first you hear a voice sample played back by the a112
in normal mode. this sample is used for all examples.

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-sample.mp3
filesize: 34 kb

2.

same sample, internal a112 lowpass filter is disabled.

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-sample-nolpf.mp3
filesize: 34 kb

3.

now the a112 is in wavetable playback mode.
the wavetable is selected by a frequency-modulated lfo.

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-varispeed.mp3
filesize: 108 kb

4.

same as above, with some s&h action at the pitch cv input.

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-varispeed+pitch.mp3
filesize: 90 kb

5.

no pitch modulations and a really slow lfo selecting the
wavetable. filtered by an a120 instead of the internal lpf.

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-slow.mp3
filesize: 250 kb

6.

to get closer to granular synthesis, this example
uses various random modulators and additional modules
to fake more granular functionality.
modules used: a112, a118, a120, a131, a138a, a138c,
a141, a145, 2x a147, a148, a149/1, a176, 2x a180

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-allrandom.mp3
filesize: 275 kb

7.

same as above, with different parameter values.

http://www.selfoscillate.de/a100files/a112-allrandom-2.mp3
filesize: 274 kb

hope ya like it.

best wishes

Well, now Bakis, has confused me. Ingo, did you talk to yourself or
was it me babbling to myself in front of the monitor? And how can
Bakis know? Is there a Doepfer Spy Module I havn't heard of?

I think we're getting closer... Doepfer is not only selling us Spy
Modules but he also plays his tricks on custom authorities. Now his
first paragraph of message # 8547 makes a total different read!

Re: a112 sound examples

2005-09-01 by selfoscillate

hello,

granular synthesis is roughly based on sampling.
the sampled material is chopped into very tiny parts,
called grains. every grain gets an own envelope (to smooth
the edges), pitch and time information, often also some jitter
and offset parameters. the fact that every grain can
play at any time consequently means that more than one
grain can play back at the same time, which is what a
monophonic wavetable device like the a112 cannot do.

with granular synthesis (or better granular resynthesis)
samples can be vaporized into dense sound clouds,
when using noise as modulator.

in the granular resynthesis model pitch and playback speed
are independent from each other, so other obvious applications
are time stretching and pitch/formant shifting.

that is just a very basic explanation, you'll find
more detailed info on the web for sure.

best wishes

ingo

Nice sound examples Ingo!
Makes me sad that there's no Mac software for this module.
Otherwise I would buy it for sure.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
