another a188/1 example

another a188/1 example

2005-12-29 by selfoscillate

hello all,

here is another sound example taken from the a188/1 prototype,
this time equiped with a 2048 stages bbd ic.

again the tr808 is used as sound source. the tr808
runs through an a119 and from there into the a188/1.
the a119 envelope follower modulates the delay time.
the recording starts with high bbd clock speed. then the
clock speed decreases until it runs very slow.
not only the sound but also the rhythm changes
drastically. to be even more drastic, a triangle lfo
kicks in and additionally modulates the delay time.
the sound is warped into strange territories.
after that the clock speed increases again.

hello,
it's a pleasing thing 188 sounds like metasonix's 'butt probe' (Big Black
Dong :)
can the stage snippet be reversed, or that requires some other module as
well?
thanks and happy 2006

hello tomek,

you can't change the scanning direction of a bbd,
so the bbd cannot play backwards, it is just not built
for such things. i guess that was your question?
afaik reverse playback can only be achieved with a
digital delay.

best wishes

Thanks Ingo, that was my question

are there plans for such a device? would love to have a cv control on
a digital delay.

tomek-
a friend of mine here in baltimore (usa) named peter blasser designs
VERY unconventional synthesizers. he is somewhere between a virtuoso
synth designer and a circuit bender.

his latest creation which he is selling from his website is a dual 8
bit voltage controlled digital delay with an analog mini chaotic cross-
modulating oscillator heart for control and audio applictions. it can
do what you mention plus many more crazy things. its very
experimental, but it sounds like that's what you're into anyhow.

his website is

http://www.ciat-lonbarde.net/

tell him tom borax sent ya.

hello tomek,

yes, a clocked digital delay is planned,
but there is no confirmed release date yet.
yes, it will for sure have cv control.

best wishes

The analogue systems rs290 is such a device... though I don't think it can
do backwards delays.

Thanks Ingo,

this is slightly off topic: can cv be applied to modify existing digidelays(
guitar stompbox is what i'm thinking)?
cheers

hello tomek,

you will have to modify the stompbox to get
vc of delay time, but it depends on the stompbox
if this is possible. i can't tell much about that,
i'm no electronics engineer, but i think that
this is not an easy task.

best wishes

Hi Tomek

> this is slightly off topic: can cv be applied to modify existing digidelays(

A CV-input might be quite difficult, but ist should be easy to add an
clock input which should be fed by a highspeed VCO.

The highspeed VCO could be realized by any VCO and a A-196. The A-111
might be able to be set to higher frequencies, when other values (470 pF
or less) are used for the frequency determinating capacitor.

Florian,

thanks for the answer, could you mail me with more info on that (priv or
group). i'm not sure how to implement a clock into the signal chain.
thanks again

The clock is NOT in the signal chain. This clock is a rectangle signal
within the circuitry of the Flanger-stompbox. You have to find it on the
pcb of the dedicated stompbox and then you have to add an kind of insert
   jack to this clock-signal.

If you have a stompbox, then have a look which BBD chip it uses. Then
try to get the datasheet for the BBD. Usually the datasheets provide a
basic schematic of application examples. Use this examples to reverse
engineer the real schematic of your stomp box.

Sorry that I cannot help more.
