AW: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: VFX-SD Upgrade to SD-1

2006-02-14 by Hans Artmann

I'll try to shed some light on the VFX series

Vanilla VFX: 21 voices, OS V2.1 was the latest
VFX-SD: 21 voices + floppy drive + sequencer 30.000 notes, the board is
different and there are more push buttons to work the sequencer, can be
upgraded with memory to 75.000 notes (set SQX70). More waves (141)
It could be upgraded to VFX-SD 2.0 with some improvements like new
effects - practically like the SD II without the Mega Piano
SD II: is the upgraded SD (2.0 with Mega Piano)
I think there was an upgrade from SD to SD 2.0 and from SD to SD II,
both being EPROMS.

Then comes the SD1, starting with 21 voices, then 32 voices and a new OS
going to 4.0 or so. There was an upgrade kit from SD1 to SD1/32. There
was also an upgrade kit from SD to SD1/32 which was very expensive, and
very rare.

So what is the difference between the VFX-SD & VFX-SD-II ?

I have the basic VFX. The floppy of the VDX-SD would be nice, but I
have learned to live without it. My sequencing is done by an XL-7 or
software so I don't really need that. The few extra drums and a piano
sample are OK for those that use the VFX for piano & drums, but I don't.
So besides the SD-1/32 having more voices, very desireable when you
layer and chord, is there anything else I am missing out on with the
later versions ?
