You´ll need a new sound ROM too - called ´megapiano´ ROM among some people. __________________________________________ Get your own goowy now @ http://www.goowy.com

Hmmm - I don't suppose those are very readily available, eh? Not found on Route66studios.com or syntaur.com. --- In Ensoniq-VFX-SD@yahoogroups.com, Claus <clauzii@...> wrote: > > You'll need a new sound ROM too - called 'megapiano' ROM among some people.

It was a simple inquiry. Sorry if you feel I'm wasting forum bandwidth or storage space... You know that people shy away from purchasing a unit just because the battery needs to be replaced and it will garner less money for that simple reason (and simple job for those handy with such matters). But, not everyone is technically inclined. Definitely most people aren't interested in upgrading a machine themselves if it means going under the hood to replace IC's... which for them means hiring a tech and waiting who knows how long for the work to be done. MIDI flash-able units are one thing which an average users might approach - although some people won't go near that either. So, if it's okay, I'd like my question about sound ROM's to stand. Perhaps the odds are slim, but maybe someone has a source...? --- In Ensoniq-VFX-SD@yahoogroups.com, "Bob S." <tttsystems@...> wrote: > > I don't know anything about the upgrade, but I suppose if the upgrade were possible and at a reasonable cost, the VFX wouldn't be selling for $100-$150 and the SD-1 for $300-$500 on Ebay...... > >

I didn't see anyone come up with the definitive answer on this. As far as I can remember, way back when the VFX-SD to SD-1 upgrades were originally offered, the upgrade to an SD-1 was a motherboard swap, not just a chip swap. But that conversation may have been talking about VFX vs. VFX-SD, or maybe the 21 vs. 32 voice versions of the SD-1. There were essentially five synth versions in this family: VFX VFX-SD VFX-SD-II SD-1 SD-1 32 voice I know the VFX and VFX-SD have different motherboards. The VFX-SD and VFX-SD-II might share the same motherboard. The others I do not know about for certain. The price of the upgrades that Ensoniq originally offered would NOT lead one to believe that the SD-1 and SD-1-32 upgrades were just a chip swap. Can anyone on this list speak definitvely on whether diferent members of the family used the same circuit boards? --> Steve Wahl -- Steve Wahl steve@... Real men don't take backups, they just "mv home.tar.gz olsen_twins_hottub.mpg" and share it on KaZaA -- Unknown

So what is the difference between the VFX-SD & VFX-SD-II ? I have the basic VFX. The floppy of the VDX-SD would be nice, but I have learned to live without it. My sequencing is done by an XL-7 or software so I don't really need that. The few extra drums and a piano sample are OK for those that use the VFX for piano & drums, but I don't. So besides the SD-1/32 having more voices, very desireable when you layer and chord, is there anything else I am missing out on with the later versions ? I'll try to shed some light on the VFX series Vanilla VFX: 21 voices, OS V2.1 was the latest VFX-SD: 21 voices + floppy drive + sequencer 30.000 notes, the board is different and there are more push buttons to work the sequencer, can be upgraded with memory to 75.000 notes (set SQX70). More waves (141) It could be upgraded to VFX-SD 2.0 with some improvements like new effects - practically like the SD II without the Mega Piano SD II: is the upgraded SD (2.0 with Mega Piano) I think there was an upgrade from SD to SD 2.0 and from SD to SD II, both being EPROMS. Then comes the SD1, starting with 21 voices, then 32 voices and a new OS going to 4.0 or so. There was an upgrade kit from SD1 to SD1/32. There was also an upgrade kit from SD to SD1/32 which was very expensive, and very rare.
