Another thought occurs to me... How are your technical skills?

I'm questioning whether the floppy drive has seen much use, or what
environments it may have been in. The heads might be dirty, or there might
be actual dust in the drive. If the attempt at formatting a disk doesn't
work, I'd advise giving the drive a cleaning; possibly with a shot of air.
