SD-1 going out of tune

SD-1 going out of tune

2004-09-28 by homebythe_sea

Hi,

I went to rehearsal last nite and my SD-1 started going out of
tune. I checked the tune parameters under the MASTER button and it
was set to 0. It would go up and down in tune and then settle in at
a 1/2 step low (play an E and it would sound like and Eb)

I opened the top cover today, and disconnected the power ribbon
cable that plugs into the left most circuit board, just for the odd
chance that it was dirty.

It has been stable for a few hours now, but I have a gig coming up
in a few weeks and im worried it will act up again.

Anyone see this problem? Any fix? could it have been dirty power
at the rehearsal? At home it seems ok again...

Thanks
Rich

Hey Rich,

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but did you check to see if your Mod and
Pitch wheels are clean?
Of course any dust or debre will certainly interfere with the performance of
the wheels and drastically
change the sound. Just a though. It's always best to start with the
obvious things first right?

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] SD-1 going out of tune

2004-09-29 by yea ok likeyoucare

First let me introduce my self..my name is Ricci. I've been a proud owner and user of the Ensoniq family...that is up until the day that everything I owned got stolen including my SD-1. (Long story). I started looking around for an SD-1 replacement and didn't have too much luck. Then I tried ebay and I finally bought a VFX-sd. The only reason I wanted to find another Ensoniq was so I could access all the original music I had stored on disks. Come to find out the friggen VFXsd was NOT capatable with the SD-1 so I was stuck and a bit pissed for being suckered into this deal without getting the facts. Long story short I contacted THESONIQ.com and had an SD-1 motherboard put in the thing and now I have my BABY BACK!! Total cost $270 for the VFXsd board + $160 for the motherboard upgrade for a total of = $430 for and SD-1!!..
About the problems you guys are having..another thing I have noticed about the Ensoniqs is overheating!..They do some weird shit when they got hot..Always try and keep an fan of some sort attached or close enough to cool that thing off especially at your gigs..

RE: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] SD-1 going out of tune

2004-09-29 by Rodney Mcdonald

Rich,

I've experienced a similar problem and was related to the Mod wheel. It
may be getting flaky, too, which I think is what you suggesting.

It seems like you by-passed the problem with hardware, but you can bypass
the issue with software, by turning off where it shows *MOD* in the parms on
each of the active sound elements of your patch - then save the patch.

I don't use the mod wheel for much, so I haven't put much effort into
replacement - but the next step would be trying to clean with a compatible
contact cleaner (for inside the potentiometer or equivalent device) or
replace.

Has anyone else had that same experience of the SD-1 overheating? I've only had mine now for about three months and
I do plan on gigging with it. I just want to make sure there isn't going to be a performance problem. So far I've not had
any problems at all but if this is a regular issue with all SD-1's I sure would love to know. Thanks.

Re: SD-1 going out of tune

2004-09-29 by Alan

I've had mine for 10 years now. And I have literally beat the
living daylights out of it. It's been left on for weeks at a time,
played in Sub Zero Temperatures, Dropped several times, thrown
(once), Constant transportation, Daily pounding use for 10 years.
The power supply does get hot, but mine has never caused me any
problems, well, one time the OS got corrupted somehow, and it would
blow a fuse everytime I tried to load stuff from disk, but once I
got the OS re-loaded (this was about 7 years ago) with a new OS
disk, I haven't had a single problem. Nothing holds up like this
thing has, I've been really amazed at the thing holding up not only
durability wise for 10 years, but as far as sound quality wise.
I've been wanting an 88 Key replacement, but even then, I'm still
not putting this thing away, it's been with me a long long time, and
has been a really good friend despite how much I've abused it.

SD-1 going out of tune

2004-09-30 by homebythe_sea

Hi all,

Thanks for all your input. The unit has been on for a day now , and
I just checked it. it is exactly 1/2 step out of tune.

I did do all the obvious, centered the pitch wheel, lowered the mod
wheel to 0, and checked all master parameters...

I am going to try reinitializing it, that might work.

Also, Im going to try and spray out the pitch and mod wheels with
contact cleaner....

Ill let you know if im successful

Thanks!!
Rich
