Best B3/Leslie patches

Best B3/Leslie patches

2005-10-05 by bldn10

What are the best B3 w/ Leslie patches you guys have come up w/? I'm
looking for factory or modified factory patches. Has anyone done any
tweaking and created a better mousetrap?

If not, what is a good B3 emulation that is affordable? I just lost a
Voce Micro-B II on ebay for $240 - is that the most bang for the buck?

Bill,
I have a Micro B II and the sounds are good (GOOD). I found that I use my ensoniq settings (both SD-1 and TS) and not the Voce unit. In my opinion the real sound of the B-3 is found more in the Leslie, than in the sample/patch. I picked up a motion sound pro3tm (it has a rotating horn) and using stock patches veterans in my band jaws dropped. For what it's worth,

A Casio through a Leslie sounds more like a B3 than a Hammond through a
motionless PA speaker.

This whole deal hits home for me.
My main axe is a homebuilt FrankenClone based on a Voce V3and runs
through my homebrew Bride of FrankenLeslie speaks (the rig description
is long ;-) I have a micro-B and micro-BII, also but they don't get out
much. In Frank is also a Kurzweil microPiano.

I throw the VFX-SD on top for all the great synth sounds that Frank
doesn't do, so getting a B3 on the Ensoniq isn't gonna get it for me ;-)

If a guy hadda MS pro3, then the microB should sound dandy and give you
more flexibility than relying strictly on the VFX. I'm sure there's one
or two "Hammond sounds" the VFX can do better, but overall, I'd give the
nod to the microB. Add on a set of Voce drawbars and it'll become REAL
apparent.

I have an ELP B3 patch I made......sounds fine to me.

I also use presets from Emu Vintage (also good is Emu with B3 ROM) and a drawbar organ setting in my Technics WSA1. But I like the dirtyness of the VFX patch.....

RE: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Best B3/Leslie patches

2005-10-06 by EXT-Schurr, Larry A

Can of worms, here.
Leslie sim is a touchy subject for many. It is genuinely a learned-ear
concept. That is, just like your favorite string patch makes most
classical violinists cringe, a similar leslie sim can be a resounding
nails-on-chalkboard to an old gospel or jazz purist. So you gotta know
where you fall in there and what you wanna actually accomplish.

Also, it is without exception that a sim is gonna be LESS articulate and
motive than the real thing. After all, NO speaker or FX box can
replicate the physical rotations of the mechanical process. That said,
a sim simply hasta be considered and auditioned as a studio device.
That is, what would a leslie sound like through microphones and played
over these monitors?? Only then can you judge a sim, IMO. And *even*
then, they fall decidedly short.

The sim in the microB is blunt and clunky, IMO. Remember, too, that
it's different from the microBII, which is merely clunky ;-) As
halfracks with good-enough sound, they're dandy pieces for pickup gigs,
outdoor ordeals, and certainly practice, but may not make muster for
your headlining efforts. Admittedly, they once *were* pretty good,
really. But like Arp Omni strings, really not quite up to snuff for a
more discriminating ear than once was. But for Hammond pads, they'll
make nice.

They have accel/decel, they have seperate horn/drum speeds (though you
can't do much with it) and few other things. The sound is a tad grainy,
too. Having the speed ramp and the split hi/lo processing puts it above
any synth patch by anyone, but that matters more to that "sounds like a
Leslie" bunch more than the "sounds good enough" bunch. If you're into
the speed switching, THAT's where it would be more of a strong point
than just a well-crafted patch.

They're no XK-3, Clavia, or CX-3 by a very long way, but not bad for
casual use. But again, through a real leslie, they're dandy ;-) Hope
that helps.

Re: Best B3/Leslie patches

2005-10-06 by bldn10

Thanks, guys. I'm just looking for something better than what I am
using now which is the factory "organizer" w/ rotary effect. This is
just a little pick-up band that rarely appears in public. I'm just a
hack.

Bob, any way you can post the parameter tweaks you made to get your
patch?

From what I read on the Internet the Voce Micro-B II is still
considered a decent B3/Leslie emulation, w/ the Voce V5 the top dog. In
a 1995 Keyboard Magazine B-3 roundup its Leslie sim was rated better
than everything at the time except the Voce V3 (V5 not out yet), better
than the XB-2 and CX-3. Anyone want to sell theirs?
