HELP with sounds and downloads for SD-1

HELP with sounds and downloads for SD-1

2007-11-07 by scottking050

Hey everyone,

I am new here and have no experience with downloading sounds and
what tools I need (and where to get them, I couldn't find a tools
option) to transfer them to a new floppy and then to my SD-1.

I am looking to orchestrate a piece and I need some good violin and
cello sounds as well as any other orchestra instrumentation. I don't
want the overall big string sound, I am looking for good individual
sounds.

So if anyone here could take a sec and walk me through where to find
the sounds here and what are the steps of downloading them and
transferring them to a blank floppy so they can be used in the SD-1,
I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

I think that Giebler selss something that will do this if you run
Windows. Personally, I'm finding that storing pretty much everything
on the computer (except for the sequencer OS, which you can't send
via MIDI) and sysexing it over works best.

The SD-1 ROM VIOLIN and CELLO are pretty decent; they'll never fool
anyone into believing they're real strings, but they're quite
expressive.

Keep pushing the SOUNDS button until you see the second bank of
internal sounds, then work your way through the soft buttins under
the display. They're in the middle somewhere - my fingers know, but I
don't. :)

I guess you havn't seen the file section of this group yet. There are plenty of sounds, even a library with 1000+ patches stored in a SOUNDLIB library. This nice program's also there for free download.
Be careful with the Giebler tool. It's certainly good but it only works from DOS like other tools dealing with VFX/SD floppies - and when I say DOS I mean DOS and not a command shell under XP.
There's plenty information in the archive about this.
The easiest way to get your sounds to the SD-1 is to attach a couple midi cables and use any sysex program like midiox...

thanks for all of your help guys.
i actually wrote the wrong model (i actually have the SD not the SD-1) and so the violin and cello aren't in the sound bank.
as for the other stuff, i am VERY BAD at the files and midi this to sysex that run through this unit amplified by that software!
but i will look into trying to figure it out.
i'm really not as stupid as i sound.
thanks for your help.

AW: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: HELP with sounds and downloads for SD-1

2007-11-09 by Hans Artmann

Any USB MIDI interface will work. Try to go step by step.
- install midiox
- plug in your interface
- if necessary, install the drivers provided for your interface (ok, your OS must be supported)
- the Swissonic must show up in the midiox interface list
When you've come that far take your SD
- connect your SD to the Swissonic: midi-in to midi-out and vice versa
- open the midiox midi monitor
- you should now see the midi messages coming in when you're pressing keys and play along
Ok? Then sending sysex files should work as well:
- enable sysex messages in the SD system midi menu!!
- open the midiox sysex window, load a .syx or a .syx and send it to the interface connected with the VFX
A bank goes to the internal ram replacing the old one, a single patch goes to the edit buffer from where you can store it to the internal ram.
Oh, and there's a manual for both the SD and midiox.
I hope that helps.

That is strange.

I think Bob "Notes" Norton's partner plays one. You can probably find
Bob over at the windcontroler yahoo group.

The old librarian program Soundlib worked with VFX patches. There's a
big library of patches floating around. It's probably in the files
section of this group.

I think it works with XP. The program seems to run fine on my machine
in Win95 compatibility mode. I haven't moved any MIDI with it though.
Someone suggested running the installer in Win95 compatibility mode.
(Right-Click the program, compatibility is in "Properties".

Hope this helps,
Nathan

P.S. Sorry about that last message. It was meant for another group.

Soundlib works on XP - put everything in a folder right under C: and no blanks in the filename.
What Roger says in the other post is correct, MIDI transfers from soundlib might not work in a fast computer environment. With MIDIOX you can adjust both transfer speed and buffer size.

Hi Again,

In the interests of accuracy......

One can't actually slow down a midi transmission. Also a midi
transmission won't flow faster from a faster PC, because the midi buss
is a fixed speed protocol. (1 seem to remember it's around 31k?).

However. The midi spec allows for "pauses" to be written into the
transfer of sys-ex (patch) information. It also allows control of
"packet" sizes. These features are less common in modern sys-librarian
programs because all modern gear has heaps of processor grunt and heaps
of ram in a buffer area to accommodate the (by today's standards) fairly
humble midi speeds.

But in our dear old Ensoniq relics, the ram buffer was (is) made up of
slow ram chips - and not many of them, AND... very small overhead
before the processor maxed out. So a sys-ex librarian that allows a
"slowing" (i.e. insertion of pauses and the sending of smaller packets)
is ideal. But the program won't refer to these actual techniques, it
will just refer to the result - "slow".

I used to use a program on mac that had speed settings, and they were
"normal", "slow" and "v-e-r-y slow". The only one that worked was
"v-e-r-y slow". But work it did, so all was well.

HOWEVER....... Poly key pressure, play more than one patch at once but
simply doubling clicking on the additional patches you want to hear
(i.e. strings and piano), record a quick sketch of an idea in the
sequencer, and have it still be there after you turn the thing off....
Can my $7000 Motif -7 do all that?? no .

Yamaha - eat my soiled undergarments!!

I regard my SD-1 as the keyboard equivalent of a 62 L-series strat. I
have no desire to own a mini-moog, great toy, great collectors item, but
I've never PLAY it. The SD-1 one is the most expressive keyboard I've
ever encountered to PLAY. (poly key pressure!!! way to go!!).

But I'm preaching to the converted aren't I?

I'll shut up now.

cheers

Roger
