Batteries, Lithium or otherwise

I received this info from a repairship a few years back (I think around '96) concerning the battery in the SD-1 (and I am certainly NOT an electronics repairperson of ANY kind, so I'll have to paraphrase): The only one to replace the battery (which is the yellow capacitor sized component described in a previous posting, and which should last at least 5 years according to the Users manual), should be an authorized Ensoniq (now Emu?) repairperson; or, as a minimum, an experienced synth repairperson. The reason: I was told the proper method to replace the battery first involves something like wiring the replacement battery (or some source equivalent to the battery load) in parallel PRIOR to removing the old one. The apparent reason: removal of the battery does much more than wipe out your RAM; it has been known to wipe out the ROM0 and ROM1 also, which I guess means replacement of ICs on the board. Has anyone heard of this battery replacement method, or anything resembling this type of process?
