Ensoniq spotted (off topic?)

Ensoniq spotted (off topic?)

2003-06-16 by Steve Wahl

VFX'ers,

Once in a while I've toyed with the idea of replacing my VFX with
something more current, but the keyboard feel of any newer synths I've
tried just doesn't compare with the good old VFX.

We went to the Journey/REO/Styx concert (in St. Paul, MN) this
weekend, and I have to assume someone else agrees with me about the
feel of current keboards, because Johnathan Cain had an Ensoniq
keyboard stacked on top of the red piano. I believe it was a TS-10 or
TS-12, not a VFX, so it's off topic, but thought I'd mention it
anyway.

You know, I've tried that replacing the VFX thing once already. It's a
mistake I'll not make again. When I traded my first VFX-SD (plus a chunk of
cash) for a Korg X2, I became very disappointed fairly quickly. Since that
time, I owned several other boards, both newer and older. Now that I've got
a VFX-SD again, I'm really comfortable playing. Sure, there are some things
I wish it had that many newer boards do, but I can really also do just fine
without.

My VFX-SD is once again the heart of my rig. And that's the way, uh-huh
uh-huh, I like it. Uh-huh, uh-huh.

Hey All
Roegster here. Johnathan Cain has used a VFX before
and who can blame him. After uploading the patches
from my sound librarian into my VFX, I was able to get
the "Huge Orchestra" patch to replace using my Roland
S-50 as a Mellotron. I'm playing keyboards in a
progressive metal band and the VFX cuts thru like a
symphony. And for some songs, the "Arp 2600" patch
gives my minimoog a run for the money. I would be lost
without it and the "Piano and Strings" patch makes the
most beautiful compliment when midied to the grand
piano sample in my S-50. Plus I can bring it in with
my volume pedal for even more dynamics.
All in all, I would say that my VFX is the most
under-rated keyboard of all time. And when I read that
my all time favorite keyboardist, Tony Banks, used
one, I was smiling for a week. Sure, it had
calibration error problems to begin with, but by
hardwiring the two circuit boards under the action
together, I haven't had ANY problems since. It is
truely my most irreplacible board, with my DX7 running
a close second. Newer doesn't always mean better, and
I wouldn't trade my VFX for the entire product line of
Korg, Roland, Access, or any others. So maybe I'm a
little biased, but when you find something that works
for you, you stick with it. Have a wonderful week.......................Roegster

I've always been impressed with how older Ensoniq's cut it in a mix. And
now, so are my new bandmates. I've just started playing in a band again,
and the rest of the guys can't believe that my VFX is an almost 13-year-old
instrument. I'm doing about 90% of my parts with it. The other 10% are
coming from an Alesis QS6.1 or out of Reason on a Powerbook.
