Floppy Drive Configuring

2005-10-14 by Tim Curtis

Well, I found a stumbling block with this Series I...

When trying to boot the machine, neither floppy drive is working.

The drives in this machine are both Qume drives - a DT/8 and an 842.
The PCBs on the drives look to be identical.

Looking at the drive PCBs, it looks as though these may not be the
original drives from the Fairlight. I pulled out my IIx service manual
and it lists that the standard Mitsubishi drives need to be configured
with jumpers on shorting blocks:

JFC, PS, SE, DC, M2, S2, I, R, IT, MS, MO, RFA, HR, A, HUN, WP, DS, 2S,
RM, and a wire link option on Y

While the Qume drive is lacking some of those jumper designations, it's
only got jumpers on shorting blocks:

Y, C, and DS1 (DS2 on the second drive)

Additionally, both drives have the terminating resistor packs present,
which should be a no-no, as far as I recall.

Does anybody have any insight on these drives and how they should be
configured?

Thanks,

Tim
