pen dignostics

2005-11-19 by e233dpj

-Following Peter Connolly's suggestion, here is info that might be of
value :-D

To run keyboard/pen dignostics on Series 3.

1) Exit to OS9 shell. You will have to QUIT to do this and not just $
to it.

2) Press CTRL SHIFT REP DEL all at the same time. (good luck!)

3) The dignostics should now be running. They run at a hell of a
speed, so don't worry!

4) Press each alpha keyboard key in turn to see the key letter or name
on the monitor.

5) Move the pen around the tablet. As you do so, the pen's X and Y
co-ordinates are displayed on the VDU. (The dignostics continue to
scroll as you do this, but with practice you will see where to look!)
Press the pen button. The VDU shows On for a press button event and
Off when the button isn't pressed.

All pen and keyboard functions can be tested this way.

6) Return to CMI in the usual way.

To adjust working area of the Graphics Pad-.

If you experience 'dead'(ie. the cursor disappears and pressing the
pen button does not issue commands etc) areas around the pad, usually
at the bottom, you can alter the pad's working area as follows:-

Select a suitable CMI page. The directory one is probably best as this
is filled with icons, etc.
Open up the alpha keyboard by removing the screws on the bottom.
Depending on the age of the keyboard, the pad will have either 2 or 3
blocks of cables entering it on 2 or three sides. Pull off these
connectors and unscrew the tablet. If your tablet has 3 connections
you will find 2 tiny pots below it near the top. One of these adjusts
the working area of the pad, the other its position on the pad. Turn
these pots with a plastic screwdriver or similar. You will need to
reconnect the connectors to your pad and keep trying to adjust the
pots as you move the pen across the pad in order to see whether you
have taken out the dead area(s). This is not a difficult job but it
needs a little trial and error on your part to find the optimum
setting. What you are effectively doing is "zooming out" with one pot
and then shifting the zoomed out bit around the pad with the other.
Unfortunately, if the dead area was originally in the middle of the
pad, there is not much you can do about it without replacing the pad,
because if you get rid of the dead area on one working CMI page, you
will inevitably need to use that area on another.
Once you are satisfied, put everything back in reverse order.
BTW if your pad has 2 blocks of connectors, I think the pots are to be
found on the underside of the pad itself (?)

Hope this is of value!
