Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: CMI 2X storage solution is becoming urgent

2006-07-01 by James Thomson

Bonjour Pascal,

J'espere que vous vas bien ! This is one of the biggest wishes of the CMI
community. A few technicians here have had some good ideas for a modern
storage solution for the CMI 2X, but unfortunately we haven't anything yet
that will enable you to forget about the 8" floppy format. It is my opinion
however, that the 8 " format is probably the most reliable of all the floppy
formats. I am amazed how I can load data from 25 year old disks without an
error. I don't think you would be able to say this about the 3 1/2" format !
I have also tried to resurrect the CMI 2X hard disk option with the help of
a friend ( brilliant technician ) but I have not received the co-operation
needed by certain individuals in the CMI community to make the hard disk
option a reality. There are many secrets held by a few !
 I have to say I am truly amazed that we don't have a 3 1/2 " floppy or 5
1/4" floppy solution. The CMI 2X has been with us since 1982 and still we
have just the 8" format ! There are technical people here ,if they just took
the time, could create a 5 1/4 or 3 1/2" system boot disk for the 2X. Its
creating the system boot disk which is the tricky part, because initially
you would have to have 1 8" drive as drive 0 and the more modern drive as
drive 1 on the same ribbon cable at the same time.
Perhaps one day I will wake up to a modern CMI 2X storage solution !

Regards,

James Thomson

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
