I' ve stoppped sampling in the IIx since 2 years as I don' t have
anymore 8" inch disks to save the sounds. I' m also thinking about
selling it as I' ve transfered all my library in more recent gear
that use compact flash card. Some friends have lost sounds as those
8" disks are getting less and less reliable. No doubt that many of us
will lose important data within the next years. Finally the IIx will
become a completely unusable sampler.

CMI 2X storage solution is becoming urgent

2005-11-27 by James Thomson

Hi,

I have bought quite a few brand new 8" floppy disks recently which will not
format. There is nothing wrong with my drives its simply that the floppy
disks themselves are flawed. This is very worrying for all CMI 2X users as
even with new disks we are not guaranteed that they will work !
There are some very knowledgeable technicians here and I urge them to
please come up with an alternative solution for sound storage soon. This
needs to be made a priority for the future of the CMI 2X. Eventually all
floppies will fail and we desperately need a modern storage method for the
CMI 2X. It is a very creative instrument which deserves to be kept going.
I am willing to put up some finance if a solution looks promising. Many
thanks,

I've seen somewhere on the internet that somebody's doing a replacement
drive for the IIx. A 3"1/2 drive instead of the old 8".
I will try to refind that link.

Although technically inept and unable to provide intellectual
capital for a project like this, I would be happy to help underwrite
the financial cost as well. I would love a modern storage system
for the CMI IIx.

This definitely has been done before; I once had access to a IIx with two
3.5" drives.

Hi Malte,

would you mind telling us more about this 2x with 3 1/2" drives? Where was
it and who owned this system ? Did it work well? Many thanks,

IS there enough information on the mod to enable others to get it
done?

The IIx had two additional drives "sandwiched" between the 8" drives.
Detailed operation escapes me; this has been roughly ten years ago. I
believe if a floppy was present in the target 3.5 drive it was used; if not
the 8" drive had priority (this is strictly from memory).
The mod itself worked very well; copying and working with the 3.5 floppies
worked like a charm and everything was very quiet.
I don't recall which way the floppies were formatted but I believe it was
not a standard 1.44 MByte format.
The modification consisted of the floppies and an additional board with
various chips on it; but the chip labels were scratched off or painted over
(can't remember) for obvious reasons. I'm trying to recall who did the
modification.

Hi malte,

This sounds brilliant ! Anything you can remember would be appreciated. If
only you knew where this CMI 2X is now.
Cheers,

Dear members

As I also face some big problems with my drives on a IIx, I wonder
what can be done. WHo knows about drive replacment sources or
alternative media connection. Should be great to connect a moder
disk drive instead of the 8" we have.
Is the 3"1/2 drive solution available somewhere as a kit?
Thanks for a reply

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: CMI 2X storage solution is becoming urgent

2006-07-01 by James Thomson

Bonjour Pascal,

J'espere que vous vas bien ! This is one of the biggest wishes of the CMI
community. A few technicians here have had some good ideas for a modern
storage solution for the CMI 2X, but unfortunately we haven't anything yet
that will enable you to forget about the 8" floppy format. It is my opinion
however, that the 8 " format is probably the most reliable of all the floppy
formats. I am amazed how I can load data from 25 year old disks without an
error. I don't think you would be able to say this about the 3 1/2" format !
I have also tried to resurrect the CMI 2X hard disk option with the help of
a friend ( brilliant technician ) but I have not received the co-operation
needed by certain individuals in the CMI community to make the hard disk
option a reality. There are many secrets held by a few !
 I have to say I am truly amazed that we don't have a 3 1/2 " floppy or 5
1/4" floppy solution. The CMI 2X has been with us since 1982 and still we
have just the 8" format ! There are technical people here ,if they just took
the time, could create a 5 1/4 or 3 1/2" system boot disk for the 2X. Its
creating the system boot disk which is the tricky part, because initially
you would have to have 1 8" drive as drive 0 and the more modern drive as
drive 1 on the same ribbon cable at the same time.
Perhaps one day I will wake up to a modern CMI 2X storage solution !

Regards,

James Thomson

2006-07-01 by greg thurman

Greetings my fellow fairlight users

or so different directorys of sounds. Naturally when
the cmi boots up with a particular directory of
sounds. I'm not be able to load the different
dirctorys so I can go threw and play them all. Could
