Yes, the Synclaviers have a very good reputation. The whole operation is a bit different, though. It's not mostly menu-driven like the Fairlight; and you can do a lot more things from the Synclavier keyboard itself. I own a much older and smaller Synclavier and I think the price for that one machine on ebay is quite reasonable (there's another one for $8000 right now).
