Hi Brian, The maker you are referring to is the media descriptor byte, if the drive is not recognized as a windows / dos type disk, based on the media indicator, ghost would like to 'rectify' this for you. I recall it only does this if you want to make a file-by-file image. If you do a sector copy, it should leave the drive as-is. If you have an old harddrive handy, you could install linux or another operating system on it and then do a ghost to check it out. I only have dos disks here and too little time to test it. However, I used ghost last week and I was given the option to do a sector copy on an NT disk that had booted improperly before. I can very well imagine you don't want to experiment on a Fairlight disk though.
