And if you are adventurous and can pursuade the seller to ship abroad,
there are 9 units on ebay right now for 23 dollars each ex shipping and
handling. One day to go.

Hi Harald
It would really be a blessing for me if the card is also bootable on my rev. 6.03 machine. All my worries and struggle cloning my existing MFM and SCSI drives would go out the window.
This would almost be to good :-)

[Fairlight-CMI] SCSI for Samplers

2008-03-09 by Laurent LEMAIRE

I would be interested to know if some of you use SCSI HD with rev 6.03
series 3 ?

On mine, I only use Maxtor XT2190 MFM HDs, and I would like to know if
more modern HD are compatible ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

      Laurent.

Hi Laurent
I do use an external SCSI HD with my CMI III rev. 6.03.
The first external SCSI case include a MFM to SCSI card plus a Maxtor model XT-2190 seriel 2 MFM harddrive with 190 Mb capacity.
The second casing has a Fujitsu M2263SA SCSI harddrive with 680 Mb capacity. I've tried to clone this disk with some raw disc copying programs for windows and dos but without success.
Therefore I'm in constant fear of loosing these drives to harddrive failures because of old age.
I hope this helps you.
Best regards
Brian

Hello Brian,

Could you tell us where the Fujitsu come from ? Do you know who did
format it at the origin ?

Best regards.

Hi Brian,

Did you try a program called Ghost ?
You can do a sector copy with that one, and store it on a PC if
needed.

Harald

Hi Harald
Thank you for your advice.
I do have Ghost, but I haven't tried copying via Norton Ghost as I was told that Ghost needs to recognize the drive as a windows drive and that Ghost writes some kind of flag on the drive to indicate that the drive has been ghostet.
Therefore I've afraid to try out your suggestion. Have any of you darred to do this?
Best regards

Hi Laurent
I'm not sure where the Fujitsu drive came from or who did the format.
A couple of years ago I bought additional Fujitsu M2263SA drives from Ebay but since the CMI III rev. 6.03 do not have the format utility for HD's (at least my CMI III doesn't), I haven't been able to check them out with the CMI.
Laurent, I will ask the former owner of my CMI III where the external Fujitsu SCSI drive came from.
I'll get back to you.
Best regards
Brian

Hello Brian,

I think I begin to understand... From KMI web site, the procedure is
explained
and it is specified that the HD has to be hard-formated with 256 bytes
blocks.

<http://members.tripod.com/kmi9000/kmi_cmi_soft.htm#software>

I looked at the Fujitsu M2263SA Specifications and it allow formatting
with
blocks from 180 bytes or bigger. I understand why I could not succeed
with
the Seagate ST15150N. It only allow 512 bytes blocks or bigger...

I do have Release 9.34 installation floppy discs. I'll try to find a
Fujitsu HD.
Then I'll do some experiments and I'll let you know...

Regards.

      Laurent.

Hi Brian,

The maker you are referring to is the media descriptor byte, if the
drive is not recognized as a windows / dos type disk, based on the
media indicator, ghost would like to 'rectify' this for you. I recall
it only does this if you want to make a file-by-file image. If you do
a sector copy, it should leave the drive as-is.

If you have an old harddrive handy, you could install linux or another
operating system on it and then do a ghost to check it out. I only
have dos disks here and too little time to test it. However, I used
ghost last week and I was given the option to do a sector copy on an
NT disk that had booted improperly before.

I can very well imagine you don't want to experiment on a Fairlight
disk though.

Regards,
Harald
