CMI Explorer

CMI Explorer

2004-11-02 by James Thomson

Hi Guys,

A big thanks for CMI explorer. I am installing Virtual PC on my Apple
Powerbook later today. I will try and mount/browse my CMI 3 hard disks.
Hopefully it should work! I am using a PCMIA card which allows me to connect
50 pin SCSI devices to the Powerbook. I will be running Windows XP Pro on
the Mac which is running OSX 10.3.5.
Is CMI Explorer proving pretty reliable now Rob on the PC ?

James,

I have been using CMIExplorer since Rob sent me a copy at the
beginning of the year.

As I couldn't get my Series III to format either of my spare 4GB SCSI
drives (with reference to my previous threads) I pulled the system
disk out of my III backed it up in my PC using CMI explorer.

The software is, in a word, brilliant. Now that I have backed-up my
disk, I mainly use it for auditioning sounds, for which it it much,
much faster than using the Series III.

Regards,
Chris.

It's last version is good, as I think I've sufficiently tested all
of the file system functions provided. Auditioning sounds can crash
very occasionally since the code to extract samples doesn't handle
badly-formed .VC files but I'm working on this. I've been thinking
of a public release (finally!) now I have a bit more free time.

Regards,
-Rob

Re: CMI Explorer & 4GB

Chris -
didn't you get a copy of the 11.39 OS floppy to
resolve your 4GB format commands issues ?
I seem to recall your thread on the topic and we discussed
what was needed to do it. I formatted 4 external SCSI 4GB
HD's when I booted my 9.34 CMI with the 11.39 boot floppy.

for backups & auditioning, I agree CMI Explorer is great !
I'm glad Rob is still around and updating it ! Still
looking for that .WAV import feature :-) then I'll still haggle
with him for .WAV export, but one thing at a time :-)

cheers
David

Hi David,

I am surprised to hear that a 9.34 CMI would boot with an 11.39 system
disk. Can you actually run your CMI with OS 11.39 or do you have to reboot
into 9.34 ?
 I hope all is well!

hi David,
In answer to your question, no I did't get a copy of the 11.39 boot
floppy. If you (or anyone else for that matter) has a spare that they
could lend me / sell me I would be most obliged.

I too have been discussing enhancements to CMI Explorer with Rob. Top
of my wish list is the ability to write an image file back to disk.
Hopefully he will get the time to imcorporate this feature at some
point soon.

Cheers,
chris.

Re: CMI Explorer & 4GB

2004-11-04 by David J. Wilson

James -
yes, a 9.34 CMI can boot from an 11.39 /K0 boot floppy, you get
an 11.39 OS9 shell prompt. Keep in mind you are not going to be
running the entire 11.39 CMI software (e.g. the typcial CMI screens)
just a limited 11.39 OS9 shell. It is the 11.39 shell that you can
type in the typical disk setup commands to partition your SCSI drives.
I have the commands that I use written down at home (at work now).

Also, 11.39 was designed for colour graphics card usage, so
when you boot a 9.34 CMI with original monochrome graphics VDU
like mine) with 11.39 floppy, the screen resolution is a little funny
looking. But it's fine enough to use the shell and type commands
for formatting/partitioning. Once done with formatting, etc. Reboot
the CMI into 9.34 as usual.

Peter Wielk told me about the ability to do this and I got my 11.39
/K0 floppy from him.

cheers,
David
