Trevor Horn / Frankie Goes to Hollywood

I was always under the impression that "Welcome to the Pleasuredome", by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was mainly Fairlight based, but reading an article with Trevor Horn in Sound on Sound (March 2005), it suggests the Synclavier is the main workhorse.

I think the synclavier was used on later ZTT albums, such as Laughter
tears and Rage, by ACT, and on Liverpool by frankie.

There are definately fairlight sounding moments on WTTPD, for
example , the slowed down samples on "world is my oyster" have that
distinctive slowed down fairlight sound, and Trev does say the
fairlight was used on relax in the article, and War sounds pretty
fairlight-esque too, as does the extended version of two tribes.

I dont know what the synclaviers' native sound is like, never having
used one, but id bet if they had one, there's sync on the album two,
as well as the JX-8p which is all over the grace jones ZTT stuff, and
the extended version of PLeasureDome 12 inch.

There is definitely Fairlight on "Welcome...".

For example, at about 7:40 in the title track enters a very downtuned voice
which to me sounds a lot like Fairlight. No, I can't check if it's one of
the preset sounds - my IIx is still in a state of disrepair.

Thanks for a very nice segway Arron ;)

I have made a DVD containing Steve Lipson's Synclavier being used to
produce ACT and the song "Snobbery and Decay".

I'll put the link in a separate email to this group.

I was lead to believe it was the JX-10 - which I have. It's a moot
point as it is effectively TWO JX-8p ina box.

Fantastic album though "Slave To The Rhythm".

Best regards

Chris

Im just guessing that the keyboard was a jx8p, because the jx10 was
released later than the slave to the rhythm single, as far as I can
tell.

Of course, I suppose the sound could have been made on almost any
analgue poly of the era ;)

I think the the same sound was used on the Pleasurefix remix of the
Pleasuredome single, under the narration, but again, I dont know for
sure, and It a bit off topic so ill leave it there.

Looking forward to the DVD !
