noisey fans

2005-04-12 by wang chung

Hi guys, I just put a mail to peter to find out if their was any "heir
apparent" to do this fan change. I myself would like the change as I
would love to get my mfx out of the cuboard it's in. As for having a
go myself, I'll wait to see how harald gets on.

I changed the fans in my Series III about 8 months ago and I'd say
the process was "intermediate" in difficulty and scope.

From memory (apologies if it isn't 100% correct):

I bought eight 80mm Pabst fans for the main cage cooling and two
other ones for the power supply (the website I bought the fans from
didn't have Pabst ones in the size it needed - 50mm as I recall?).

I had to remove the bottom of the mainframe, the power supply, and
then the metal frames that the eight mainframe fans were bolted to.
There wasn't much room to access some of the screws, and removing
the parts was a little nerve wracking because wires would be getting
pulled around and possibly snap off from age (I had this happen with
one of the wires attached to a power supply fan).

The new fans installed easily and it was simple wiring it all up as
the previous wiring could be reused. Putting it back together was
the opposite of taking it apart; again being careful to not move
parts or wires around (very close quarters, so it's easy to make a
mistake).

My CMI is now much quieter, but not silent. I still keep it in the
closet, but I can have the door open a decent amount for ventilation
and not hear much. Definitely a huge improvement over the jet-engine
sound it had :).

Hope that helps,
-Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for this information. What voltage are the new fans ? I know that
the series 2X fans are 110-120V but Peter found a 12V source for the new
Papst fans. I hope all is well!

Hi James,

The fans I replaced were all 12VDC, so it was pretty much plug and
play in that regard.

Kind regards,
Rob
