For sale: Fairlight Series III MFX2 RACKMOUNT!

For sale: Fairlight Series III MFX2 RACKMOUNT!

2005-04-18 by pmjtaysom

All,

I'm trying to slim down my equipment and I have decided to sell my
Series III (it's the Series II I always end up using anyway!).

I traded the system from Chris Ringham (a *very* knowledgeable
Fairlight owner of around 15 systems!) around three years ago.

I understand very, very few of these rackmount Series III's were made
- I've heard a figure of less than 20 and perhaps as low as 10, but I
have no other info.

The system comes complete with the VGA graphics adaptor - so any
multisync monitor can be used (I use an NEC 18" multisync LCD) and
displays in colour, MFX2 operator keyboard (the one with dual VFD
displays) and a Series III music keyboard.

Additionally, the system is equipped with one of the 32mb RAM cards
and the later wave form super card. I have a 9GB system drive in
enclosure - plus (I think) another three or four drives still in
anti-stat packing that I bought from Peter Wielk (although these have
never been tried, I was told by Peter they contain a number of sound
libraries) which could, if installed in an enclosure, be mounted on
the SCSI bus at the same time for serious storage.

Being an MFX2, this provides multi-track recording to disk - I've
never used this but some people love the sound of the D/A's so much
they're using it as a multi-track recorder.

I've never seen another rackmount Series III for sale so I think it's
fair to say this is a rare opportunity.

Any one interested, please reply off list. In the meantime,

Thanks for the bandwidth,

Philip

As os9/mdrdos doesn' t recognize more than 4gb hard disk, I would like
to know how you succeed to get 9gb ?
I' ve two 9gb hard disk in my MFX2 but they are limited to 4gb.
Further my turbo scsi card and my cmi41 come from a MFX3, so I' ve
more than the lastest specs a normal MFX2 should have ... I also have
installed the 11.39+ software ( more open to new scsi devices ) but no
luck :°(

Hi James,

It isn't possible to address/format more than 4.095 gigabytes on a MFX-2. It
would take a rewrite of the software which I cannot see happening in the
forseeable future :-)
By the way where are you located ? I am trying to contact more Fairlight
users in the London area.

Cheers,

Philip,

With reference to your note below, would you be willing to sell one of the
spare SCSI drives you have, and if so how much would you be looking for?

Regards,
Chris.

the 9gb are useless as they can' t be formated over 4gb. So buy on
ebay some 4gb for a few cents and you will be happy !

Hi James,

In fact the 9 gig drives are perfect as they will format to 4095 megabytes
and function perfectly. There is no advantage to having a 4 gig drive at all
over a 9 or 36 gig drive. The latter are often easier to find.
