Error Codes

Error Codes

2003-03-23 by Jerry

Hello...

It's me again :-)

Do any of you have a list or know where I can find a list of error
codes and
their meaning?

I've been trying to load a couple sounds from a tape onto the hard
disk to use
in a piece.

It locates the voice, appears to be loading it to the hard disk and
then when it's
finished, I get the following

"Having some disk trouble. Error code 217"
when I go look at the directory to see if the voice did load, it's
not there.

What does this mean?

I just tried saving a couple voices to my own tape, it saves fine so
I'm not sure
if the hard disk is too full, if the tape drive is going bad or what.
I cleaned the
tape heads and still get the error.

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

Jerry

Hi Jerry
The file that is giving a 217 error message is corrupt. Over time tape and
8" disks becomes bad and files are unreadable. Get a external Hard Drive (no
bigger than 9 GB that's if your using OS 9.34. 4 GB if less than that) and
save your sounds on that. Any tapes you have back them up onto the HD. This
will keep your sounds for alot longer.
You will be unable to retrieve the corrupt file it is lost
forever........SORRY
Best regards
Colin

Re: Error Codes

Hi Colin,

Any suggestions to what type of HD is best? Will any SCSI drive work?

Well, I'm going to try a few more voices but according to your post then, ALL
my 3 tapes from Fairlight are down the toilet. I've then only got the voices that
are currently on the hard disk. I've not been able to get one off any of the 3
tapes I got with my CMI.

I know magnetic media is unreliable in the long term, just seems strange that
all woudl fail at the same time.

Well...looks like I jump off the deep end and start coming up with my own
voices via sampling. Is there a CD, I wonder, that has many if not all the
original Series III or IIx voice library I could get? I'll have to do some web
searching.

Thanks Colin. This wasn't good news.

Hi Jerry
Try and find a Quantum Hard Drive or a Western Digital. These are very good
drives. You can get them on EBay all the time for very little.
What OS are you running?
What library do you have on the HD? If there is anything interesting I feel
a possible trade coming on. I have all Fairlight's own libraries II and
added sound to make up the IIx, III and pre series II. Also some other
series II producers yet to be converted to series III, these are a small
part of my full collection. I have to stop there as if I told you what I do
have you would be taking train, planes and automobiles to get here.(ha ha)
Is any of your own samples going on to the tape streamer? Also try checking
that the tape streamer is connected right.
I have a optical drive on mine but these are unreliable. I have 2 optical
worm disks full of Han Zimmer's sounds which I can't get to. I did get allot
of his original samples from another source though.
I still have the tape streamer in it's box but no tapes Did you get any of
the sounds of the tapes to work? You could try formatting a tape again and
try a sample to see if it helped.
Let us know
Regards
Colin

Re: Error Codes

Hi Colin,

Will search eBay for a hard drive! That doesn't sound like it'll be a
problem.

I'm running OS 9, REV 6.03B but there's also another version number
that
shows mid boot. I'll take note and get back to you tomorrow when I
boot it up
again.

I've got almost all of library 1 on the hard disk and some of library
2, I can e
mail you the voice names I do have if you like. I've deleted some
that I knew I
wouldn't be using and I'm not sure what the previous owners removed.
I was
smart enough when I first got this to write down the full directory
of each tape
so I knew what voices I had and where.

Sorry you can't get to your Hans Zimmer sounds...those would be a
goldmine!
OH YEAH!

LOL! From the sounds of what you've got, I probably would be knocking
on
your door tomorrow <GG> I've not really done any sampling yet, only
tried it
out with a couple sounds from my Yamaha DX7. I've been wanting to do
some
sampling, just a matter of getting people round here to bugger off so
I've got
the time to do it. I had planned to spend some time with a few power
tools and
some broken glass (I do stained glass so I've got plenty of that on
hand) to
see what I could do with mixing waveforms and such.

I'll open the mainframe tomorrow and check to see if it's all
connected right.

I'm afraid to format a tape to try again because I'll lose a lot of
sounds I want to
use, likewise I'm now afraid to delete any sounds off the hard disk
because I'm
almost positive I'll not be able to get them again off the tape.

I'll back a sound up on the tape I recently purchased and try to get
it off the
tape again. Will let you know how that goes.

In closing I want to really thank you for starting this group. You
and Gerald
have been instrumental to me and I really appreciate it!

Best Regards,

Jerry
