I am new to this group want to say hello and question about Fairlight Series

2005-10-11 by d_freedom

WHich is the latest series? IS it series VII?

Waht advantages does the latest series have over th eolder series?

Bitwise for example.

I really like the VOX and PADs the failight puts out. That Airy
sound.

I can achive this on my Ensonic TS, My XV3030 and especially on my
JD990.

I am sure these are just copies of the failight wave or am I
incorrect?

Does anyone know which Failight Tears for Fears used in everyone want
to rule the world.

The VOX sound is just absolutley Killer!!

CAn you get that same warmth and VOX kinda sound in the newer series
FAirlight?

IF I were to ever buy one what kind of things go out on these units?
Voices? Power supplies?

Thanks

Hi,

Try to stretch to a Series3 running Rev. 9.34.
This is a 16 bit machine rather than the old 8 bit and is terrific!
100kHz sampling, bigger memory more features, etc. etc. etc....

The IIx is nice though. Warm samples (although limited by length and
bandwidth). 8" floppies are still available from Virtual Music in
Vienna. IIx were produced with MIDI capability and have a larger
memory than earlier machines.

Parts are available from various sources, particularly for Series 3
Fairlights, but are more difficult to get hold of for Series 1 and !11
machines, and many are just obsolete!.

A Series 3 can be upgraded to MFX if you run 9.34 software, but expect
to have to pay!

Good luck!,

Hi, enjoy your stay in the forum,

They may be imitated, but the principle is the same. Human voice processed
and looped correctly.

One of the members in the forum owns the Fairlight series III used on that
album.

> The VOX sound is just absolutley Killer!!

We do not know it as 'VOX', but I understand why you are lyrical about it :)

Yes, and probably better.

Go out ? as in 'break' ? Everything can break, but most likely the hinges
on the front panel will break first !

Technically the harddrive, tape unit, Floppy drives. Anything mechanical
will likely fail first. Then the clock battery (watch out for leaks!),
keyboard keys, cables, anything susceptible to static electricity
(memory).

You're welcome.

It was series II used on that record ....maybe Roland followed the
upgrade path.

was a IIx on the " Song From The Big Chair" album which was released
in 1985.

from what I hear, "Change" which was released in the album "The
Hurting" in 1983 also used a CMI (II ?)

They probably bought a III to prepare the next album.
I remember reading that they starting working on the next album with
more computers than on Song From The Big Chair... and by the time
they had recorded all the material, they found the result too close
from the preceeding album (or too sterile, i don't remember the exact
wording) and they completely changed their minds and decided to
record something more "soul".... these gave "The Seeds of Love" in
1989
I was in love with the IIx in the early eighties and thought "oh
noooo !" (if someone has the dumped recordings made by T4F around
1986-1987..., please contact me)

I think that the ex producer of T4F sold a IIx and a III (early
version if I remember well) on ebay in spring (and also a synclavier)

cheers

Hi,

I re-read the mails I got from the seller back then and he indeed stated
that Chris Hughes used both the IIx and the III on TFF and Wang Chung
albums. You are both right. Rumour has it that Roland Orzobal later got a
different III (serial number 050), which was upgraded to an MFX2.

I own that unit.

Best regards,
Harald.
