Peter Gabriel Fairlight Patch Question

Peter Gabriel Fairlight Patch Question

2006-07-04 by Ed Driscoll

Hi all,

Can anybody tell me the name of, and some details about the patch that
Peter Gabriel used in "Lay Your Hands On Me"? It sounds a little like a
BB rattling around in a can. Jan Hammer also used it at the end of his
single version of the "Miami Vice" theme.

There's a patch in Zero-G's recent Nostalgia software synthesizer that
sounds similiar to it, but its speed appears off. Any other ideas on
how to recreate this sound would be welcome.

Thanks,

Ed

Kevin,

Thanks! Do you know of any PC-based software synthesizers that
accurately reproduce this sound?

Ed

Hello Ed, I have Mr. Gabriel's disk used for the
tour. The sound that you are referencing is called
scrape, it appeared in the factory sound set available
from fairlight.
An earlier discussion about the shock the monkey
sound is actually two fairlight sounds mixed together
1)marimonk and 2) saxy2

Trade or buy Fairlight sounds and Librarys, (Let's make some music!!!)

2006-07-04 by greg thurman

I owned the fairlight that ardent studio owned and
used to produce ZZ Tops music with. I sold that
fairlight but keep the steaming tape library. I
currently have another Series III with a nice library
as well. I'm looking to expand my library. Whether it
be threw trade or cash purchase with others on this
group. I have both the series IIx and III. Let me know
what you have so we can each help the other spark more
creative music. I also have a ppg and synclavier
system I'd like to get more sounds for as well.

Hi greg,
Apparently my Series III was owned / used by ZZ Top, but the seller never supplied the tapes that he advertised with it (buying my Fairlight was a long and painful experience, some of you may remember). I wonder if the S3 I have was once yours? I bought it from a guy in New York, called Eric VanLuijk.
Kind regards,
Peter

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Peter Gabriel Fairlight Patch Question

You can now download the multitrack of Shock the Monkey on http://www.realworldremixed.com/
It's quite amazing when you hear what sounds are all used on this track.

I always thought that the Marimba part was only played by the Fairlght. But it isn't. There's also a track labelled SynergieMarimba. It sounds more marimba-like than the Fairlight preset. The same track also contains a Hammond. My guess is that the second marimba sound is being played by a Synergy (http://users.ece.gatech.edu/lanterma/synergy/), hence the label name 'Synergie'. The Marimba track played by the Fairlight is of course also included and is labelled CMI_Marimba.

Best,
David
