Pro Rec Sample Disc-anyone want to sell theirs?

2007-01-16 by yazzofever

Wondering if anyone wants to get rid of their Pro-Rec Fairlight Disc.
I asked about a year ago and I thought I would ask again.

Trying to see if I avoid paying $39 for a new one. I'm finally getting
my mirage and I look forward to bumming samples off the disc into the
mirage.

You can get it for 10 bucks less (US$ 29.99) if you can do without the
jewel case: http://www.cafepress.com/zzizzle/154081

I wish they had made a CD-ROM of it instead of an audio CD though.

I've been contacted off the list with questions about the Pro-Rec
Fairlight CMI IIx sample-CD, and thought I'd share that information with
the rest of you as well.

As far as I know, this is the only sound library anyone without a real
Fairlight can get. Unfortunately it's an *audio* CD and not a CD-ROM
(with AIFF, WAV etc. files ready for use), which means that the user has
to sample and edit the sounds with a computer or their sampler.
I wish they had made a CD-ROM with some common file-format instead. Oh well.

The library claims to be a complete Fairlight CMI IIx library (all the
factory disks that is). The two famous Fairlight sounds I was looking
for was the "aaaah" voice (which I've asked about elsewhere in this list
as how they made it is still a puzzle to me, as it doesn't sound quite
human in my ears) and the "Orch5" orchestra hit, and they were of course
included.
What I can say however is that there seems to be some inconsistency
between the library disks and the samples on the CD, because I found the
"official" Fairlight list over sample disks here:
http://egrefin.free.fr/eng/fairlight/cmi2xManualsE.php

And it certainly is different from the ones contained on the audio-CD. I
can't remember the differences off-hand, if samples are missing, if
they've messed up the filenames or something else, but for comparison,
here's a list over what the Pro-rec sample CD contains:
http://pro-rec.com/samplecds.html

How does it sound? As I've never seen, used, touched and probably never
will gain access to a Fairlight I'm not up to the task of judging how it
sounds. I see no reason to doubt that the people behind the CD haven't
been using a real Fairlight. They've even recorded the system booting up
and so on! Very strange....
The CD sounds fine to me. The looped sounds are in fact played with a
loop (which you can hear). I don't know if the loops are this audible
originally, but at least you can hear where the loops are so you don't
truncate off more than necessary when editing/looping the sound on your
computer or sampler.

The overall impression is that they've done a good job. But once again
I'm frustrated that they didn't just make a data CD-ROM out of it.

Anything else? I think I've covered everything.
So in conclusion I have to say it's a recommended buy for anyone who
wants those famouse preset Fairlight CMI sounds but doesn't have access
to a real Fairlight, partly because this is the only Fairlight library I
know of that non-Fairlight owners can access.

It can be ordered from the following website:
http://www.cafepress.com/zzizzle/154081

... and can be supplied in a sleev for US$ 29.99 or in a CD jewel-case
for US$ 39.99.

PS: a few weeks ago I'm sure I came across someone on eBay selling an
actual CD-ROM collection of the Fairlight CMI. I haven't been able to
find it again, and I have no idea if it was recorded directly from a
Fairlight or perhaps just an edited copy of the abovementioned CD.
Unfortunately I didn't bookmark it as I already had my own Fairlight
sample collection with that Pro-rec CD.

Hope someone finds all this information useful, and I'd be happy to get
comments from someone who owns/uses a real Fairlight and has also heard
the Pro-rec CD and has read the contents-listing, which may or may not
be complete.

Re: Pro Rec Sample Disc-anyone want to sell theirs?

2007-01-17 by Tomás

From what I can gather, the Pro Rec CD was recorded from a IIx that
came originally from Newcastle University UK. All sounds were played
back with the SSM anti aliasing filter engaged. There are some sounds
missing, most notably for me the string sound first use by Jarre on
"Concerts in China".

I was in email conversation with Robert Brady who made that CD. I
don't know if he's in the group.. Here's what he told me in 2001:
"The CD was recorded by feeding the Fairlight into a match amp
(basically a quiet preamp) and then into Sound Tools running on an
Atari ST Mega 4, then digitally out to DAT and then down to a CD
mastering house where it was digitally real time dubbed back into a
SADIE system and then onto exabyte and pressed onto CD.

Making CDs the old fashioned (Read Expensive!) way.

I still own a CMI (The IIx that was used for the CD), but it is
currently in Ireland (and I'm in London), so I'll have to sort that
out one day...

The CD was recorded before I had my own ProTools system, and I wnt to
a studio in Hull who had a Sound Tools system that I could use. It was
about 50% the cost of a PT room, so it made sense to drive from Devon
(Where I was living) to Yorkshire to record. Strange how technology
that was rare is now so prevalant now. Kinda like the CMI!

You're right there just wasn't the demand for a fully fledged business
based on the Fairlight library, and I didn't have the cash to create
another CD. The sound font version was created by Heavenly Audio but I
don't think they sold many at all...

Mind you some of the samples found their way into the Alesis QS range
of synths, and further into the DM Pro. That was a lot of fun as I got
to help with some of the presets that are burnt into ROM...

One day I might get around to doing the Series III library, but
probbably as a CD-ROM of some description."

Re: Pro Rec Sample Disc-anyone want to sell theirs?

2007-01-17 by Tomás

By the way, there is a selection of series III multisamples on the JJ
Jeczalik "Art of Sampling" CD, audio only. The strings and choirs are
very much worth the price. There are some series II sounds on this
disc also, recorded without the anti aliasing but played back on the
series III. Big difference compared to the Pro Rec/ Digital Domain disc!

Re: Pro Rec Sample Disc-anyone want to sell theirs?

2007-01-17 by Tomás

OK, according to that manual published in January 1985, the "Strings
3" disk is missing, replaced by a disk called "TremStr" on the Pro Rec
CD. That might explain the missing Jarre string sound I mentioned. It's
the only difference I could see on first reading.

Does anyone have that string sound available as a WAV?

Re: Pro Rec Sample Disc-anyone want to sell theirs?

Small world! Yes, Robert Brady. His original email address was at the
uni, so I made an assumption, but yes it was his Fairlight. It's in
Northern Ireland now apparently. If you see him tell him I said "hello" ;)

A guy I went to Newcastle College with was involved with that CD and it was actually his IIx used to record it.

No Tomas,

If you compare the sample listing of the Pro Rec
Disc with the link that Hallvard provided that
shows the original library, you see a lot more
differences. For instance: where is the famous
record scratch sound on the Pro Rec disc? From
what I can see the disc is missings TONS of
sounds.

The Pro Rec it appears is NOT the complete
orginal library; and they should not have claimed
that.

Almost ten years ago I bought the Heavenly Music Fairlight CD-ROM.

I guess it's the same as the Pro Rec Sample Disc. But instead all the samples are present in
Wave format and in SF2 format.

IMHO, it might have been better if they didn't record the samples with the anti aliasing
filter on. The samples sound quite 'muddy'. Not the sound I'm used to hear from other CMI
IIx sources.

What follows is the read me file from the CD-ROM, including a list of the samples.

Best,
David
http://dvdborn.blogspot.com

HMSBK Vol.2 The FAIRLIGHT SoundFont Collection
----------------------------------------------
Produced by Jose' Ortiz for Heavenly Music.

The Fairlight seems to have made it's first appearance around 1979. The series
II was launched in 1984 and only 300 or so of the series IIx's were built. Now,
they are heard on countless recordings of that period. The sound library
presented here for the first time ever in SF (SoundFont) format is the largest
known collection of Fairlight samples to date.

Here is a collection of the Fairlight's 30 disks PLUS some extra disks normally
found alongside the original library. 69 SF2 files Made from approximately 532
WAV Files have all been digitally level matched and normalized to maintain some
uniformity. Also included on this CD for your convenience are the WAV files used
in the SF2 files plus a 'dba' catalogue file for Steinberg's WaveLab Sample
Editor.

Some of the sounds have been left 'as is' though in most instances, liberties
have been taken with small doses of reverb and/or chorus to 'smooth' them out.
This has been done as many of the original samples actually did not loop very
well. This remianed the case when converting them to SF2. They are best played
lower down on a keyboard.

Enjoy!

Special thanks to Rob Brady and all at Digital Domain.

N.B. While auditioning the files, you may find that your hardware reports an
'OUT OF DRAM' message. Open the AWE Control Panel and select the SYNTH TAB. In
the SYNTHESIZER SECTION, go to the AVAILABLE SYNTH and select GENERAL MIDI and
click on APPLY. This should clear the ROM and make the memory available again.

I did say that my conclusion was based on a first reading, the
implication being that it required more reading... OK, Hallvard gave
two links, one to the Pro Rec list, and the other to a page listing
various CMI related documents. Where is the document on that page
which lists the contents of each disk? All I found was the IIx manual
from January 1985. This listed the disks, not their contents. Is there
a list in this manual?

The direct link to the sound-library list from Fairlight is here:
http://egrefin.free.fr/images/Fairlight/CMI2x/Fairlight_CMI_IIx_SoundBank.pdf

(you'll find it at the very bottom of this page (it isn't shown with a
thumbnail as the other downloadable documents):

As for the listing for the Pro-rec sampling CD, its contents can be
found on this page (scroll down a little bit):

Re: Pro Rec Sample Disc-anyone want to sell theirs?

That's interesting. Lots of disparity there. "SAXY" and "ARR1" are not
named in the official list. In fact, "ARR1" is called "SARAAR" in the
official list which is a name most of us are familiar with. Peter
Gabriel's fourth album names "SAXY" and "ARR1", which concurs with the
Pro Rec CD.

So it appears that there are at least two versions of the IIx library.
I'm sure Robert Brady and co. were sincere when they stated that the
CD contains a complete library. They just didn't know which one it
was... perhaps?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
