Hi Patrick, Welcome
I would like to take up some of your points.
It would be great for all the Fairlight manuals could be redone as
it seems that, the ones doing the rounds are the same copies which
are good but not 100%. These are the copies that JB Emonds had on
his site which has closed. He was a great Fairlight guy because when
alot of people needed these manuals he had them there and allowed
you to freely download them. He is working on a new site, about 9
months now and I can't wait for it to be finished. (Please hurry JB)
I think I'm sure in saying that the "Voice Cards" in the Fairlight
CMI IIx is the same as the Series III,(I'm 95% about this) If
someone here could also confirm this that would be great. If this is
so I have a Series III Service manual with the "Voice Card"
schematrics in it I could send you it.
With the 6809 Assembler I'm not 100% with, could you email back with
some extra details.
Fan noise can be a concern to a studio, and the fairlight likes to
be heard. I can't see why you can't change them for a more modern
fan as long as it is the same voltage, these are less noisier and
more reliable.
On the Hard Disk issue for a series IIx, this was done at a cost.
There was a Fairlight CMI Series IIL this was a Fairlight upgrade
sold to the group QUEEN. It was a model between the IIx and the
launch of the Series III. It gave them alot of trouble. I also think
that Nick Rhodes used one on the Arcadia project "So Red The Rose" I
have an interview of him in 1985 towards the end of making the
album. He says that he has seen but has not used the new series III
but said that his Fairlight had now 16 track sequencer..... "Also, I
like the writing page on the Fairlight. I've gotten used to it over
the past few years, and now that it's been expanded from eight
tracks to sixteen, that's even more handy. I used that a lot on the
Arcadia album.".....
So Patrick it can be done. About a year ago I was talking to Peter
about a HD for the IIx. He said that a friend of his was working on
this but have not heard anymore. No one wants to try out putting a
HD into their Series IIx just in case they do it harm.
Posting samples, this is a subject that has mixed opinions. I'am all
on for trading samples but it's making it work. To post them is very
easy but to get the sample image is a bit more difficult. There is a
software called Teledisk first made by the US FBI (WHICH I'LL POST
ON THE FORUM'S FILE PAGE AFTER THIS POSTING)that copies any disk in
a 3.25 5.25 and 8 inch disks but you must use proper MS DOS on PC
format( thats up to Win 95)but it's getting a PC with a 8" drive in
it to copy disks with Teledisk. Ebay would be the best place.. This
software is a must by the way for anyone who has any sort of
instrument which has libraries on floppies. The other problem is
that users with Series III can convert series I II IIx samples but
Series I II IIx users can't use series III. However this may not be
a problem.
I have some samples on a cd that are .VC I will post one on the
Forum's file page in a folder called VC's and if you or any member
get them on to there series II IIx let me know.
Best regards
Colin

I understood that a IIx is also supposed to work under OS9, but I
only have the original QDOS. The service manual mentiones that there
should be an 6809 assembler available, which usually was located on
the diagnostics disk. I can't find it though and I'm wondering if
anybody still has it on 8" floppy. (Or even a C compiler....) I want
to try out programming the monster myself and experiment a bit to see
if I can play around with filter settings etc.
Also if this superflous port is available I want to try to get a PC
connection working so that I don't need the 8" floppies anymore.
Just hobbying though ;-)

Cheers,
Patrick
