Re: Batteries

I was wondering, why just remove the battery and not replace it with a new one?

Is it not a lithium battery with about a 10 year lifespan like in the Series III?

It is useful to correctly date stamp created files.

I plan on changing my battery when I get my CMI back from Peter Wielk who is upgrading the system for me.

David Crocombe.

In the CMI IIx there is a NiCad battery which can leak with devastating results.

David is right, it usually is a lithium battery with long lifespan, not a
rechargeable niCd. one could replace it with a new one, yes. Or attach a
cable to the battery soldering points and put a battery compartment with
regular AA batteries elsewhere in the system where leakage is not such an
issue should it occur.

My IIx has a lithium ion battery in it. It has a rated voltage of 3.6V and looks like it has a manufacturing date of 1996 on it, and of course it's dead. The current battery looks like it has 3 leads soldered to the board.

Can someone recommend a replacement for it?

Thanks!
Kirk

Hi Kirk, the exact same battery type is still for sale. google for Tadiran
waffer size and you'll find something.

I recommend to have that battery removed asap.

regards,
Harald.

It's not Lithium Ion, they're rechargeable and need very careful care
and feeding.

Lithium batteries have a shelf life just about as long as their service
life, about ten years.

If you find a piece of old kit with a NiCad in it, you can drop a NiMH
straight in with no further modifications.

Hi,

I replaced mine with a 3V 2032 battery and it works fine.

They should last about 10 years without any pain of leaking any time
:-)

	Best

Re: Batteries

Hi,

(Even though I had and still have a new replacement battery,) After removing the old one (from a Series III), I soldered in two wires to a standard battery holder that carries 2 AAAA alkaline batteries.

Placed them behind the front panel in a small plastic bag.

The 3 V they provide do the job. If the batteries leak, it won't immediately harm the system, and I won't need to desolder/solder in a battery from/to the original board again.

Small additional note:

It's been quite some time since I did that, so I don't remember whether there was a diode on the board that should prevent the batteries from being "charged" when the system runs. Maybe yes (in that case, however, 3 V would (maybe) leave only 2.4 V after the diode, which might just suffice for some CMOS chip).

Especially, if you system has an accumulator instead of batteries, you may check whether there actually is a diode. If not, you may consider adding one in the wires, and if the clock shouldn't keep its time thereafter, add a 3rd battery to the pack. (Or use rechargeable batteries again, of course).

The diode should make sure that current can only go from the battery to the system (when the system power drops), but not the other way.

Kind regards, Joerg
