Horizontal 4 Gbyte Solid State Drive

Horizontal 4 Gbyte Solid State Drive

2012-08-22 by horiprod

Hi All. Just posted a picture of the NEW 4Gbyte solid state drive. It's now mounted in a rugged die-cast box, and the memory modules can be swapped out. It also now has a SCSI select switch, together with a green "on", and red "active" LEDs. The lead from the bottom goes to a SCSI plug, from where the unit derives its power. A couple of notes: will not work with early rev 6 machines, and yes, could possibly be used for MFX3 with a tiny modification, in which case it should work with modules larger than 4 Gbytes). These will be on sale shortly through my new website....

4 Gbyte Solid State Drive

Very simple and low price solution :

UltraSCSI 50pin SCSI <> IDE (165 US$):
<http://www.hantz.com/ASP/NewProducts/landingpage.asp?AUTOIDE=SCSIDE-BR2>

4GB IDE Flash Module (44-Pin Vertical) (66 US$):
<http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/ItemDetail.asp?ItemID=TS4GDOM44V-S>

Total solution : 231 US$ (without shipping), If you looking good there
found probably better price...

Hi JB. Did you try this SCSI/IDE bridge?? I've bought several different ones and not everyone works. Regards, PW

Well, I'm not JB, but I can confirm that not every SCSI/IDE bridge will work. In 2010 I did a lot of testing with an EIII-rack. There is a difference between brands and even in firmware. So the task is to find the cheapest, working ones.
As for the 4 GB IDE Flash Module, I used a different, much cheaper method. Get a Compact Flash CF \u2192 40 Pin IDE Adapter for a few dollars. (aprox 3$) and get a CF card.
This works fantastic. I can backup on my PC with a RAW image and I don't have to format and spend 4 hours of (not always succesfull) verification on the EIII. There is however ONE issue: When writing back a RAW image, make sure the CF has the right amount of space.
I had a lot of 1 GB cards from Kingston, the ones with a flower on the label. These were recommended by others. Turned out, there are at least 3 versions which each have their own, different size of memory available. The ones with the smallest amount of memory did not work at all.
When writing back an image, you can only write back on the same or larger size CF!! Best way is to name the image and include the size of bytes in the name. These cards all say "1 GB" and at first glance they seem te same, but they are not. The ones that worked for me had 961 MB and 976 MB. There were also versions with less than 961 MB. Those didn't work with the EIII. There are serial numbers etc, to identify them.
On more modern gear, like various Kurzweil series 2XXX, Ensoniq ASR-10 and EMU E5000 Ultra it seems that adapters etc. mostly work fine. It's only older gear that seems to give some problems.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Peter Kersten.

Yeah, I played with a stack of devices a few years ago. CF card (which IS an ATA interface) to an ATA->SCSI to a CMI.

You can use a good binary editor, one which will allow editing anything, files, volumes, raw volumes, memory, etc, such as 010 edit, to image old SCSI drives, archive them to PC, and pop them back onto CF cards, etc.

Sadly, those useful little buggers, CF cards, appear to be heading the way of the dodo.

We now have CF card skeleton adapters which hold micro SD cards...so your memory module can end up costing maybe $5.

But yes, it's a challenge finding which specific one will work with most or all vintage synths. We found exactly one, at the time. Even so, I don't think I could run partgen or the other OS9/OSK SCSI disk preparation utilities on it directly. Some of the low-level SCSI functions were probably not properly implemented on the adaptor.

With PW's solution, it's guaranteed to work with no messing about.

Over at the EIII forum (http://EIIIforum.com) users have had success with the CF AztecMonster CF-3.5" SCSI Converter Card:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CF-AztecMonster-CF-3-5-SCSI-Converter-Card-for-Mac-AKAI-sampler-/300774442670?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46078dc6ae

This solution might also work for the Series III.

Thanks David. Didn't know about this one.

I turns out this is actually the same as what I have, but fused onto one pcb. This has he same firmware as an Acard AEC-7720U. It's possible you need to replace the firmware with an earlier version to get it to work...........
