Fairlight IIX components eBay

2014-01-26 by linear226@excite.com

Hi all,

I've posted an entire IIX CMI on ebay today and broken into components just in case anyone's after anything, starting price of £1 for most components! Also including an unused JB Edmond Flash drive purchased around a month ago

cheers

Hi Tony,

Have you got an item number for the Main Unit?

Cheers,
Joe

Sad to see such a beautiful machine being broken apart.

On the other hand, such an act only increases the value of the remaining IIx machines still in existence making them yet rarer.

yes David,

it is gut wrenching, although the buyers who go for the keyboard, monitor, qwerty etc will possibly adding them to incomplete systems and effectively creating 'new' complete systems, you may find as a result of splitting a system like this you create 3 new ones. I've just hit the buffers in terms of what I can invest in this machine now.

YD-180 vs YD-174 drive

2014-02-02 by Roland

Hello everybody,

I have one question, maybe someone can quickly reply (because time is
running out):

In my IIx are two YD-180 drives installed. One of them has reading problems.

Tony has slaughtered his CMI and put his drives on ebay as we all know.

My question is: Can I combine one working YD-174 and one YD-180 to
make a complete running system, or is there any significant
difference between them that would make it impossible or difficult ?

Thanks for any help

Roland

I’m willing to be corrected here as I’m only a software dude J

From memory the motors in the YD-174’s are powered by 120v, and there was no option on the drives themselves to run them at 240v, so two were required to work with 240v. (in series)

So, first you need to check if your MainFrame has the 120/240v cables pre-wired.

Then someone else will have to confirm if a single YD-174 can be used when being used with 240v or you will need a step down transformer.

Good luck

[Steve]

Hi Roland,

What Steve said did ring a bell. Setting up YD-180s is far easier, I think. Less cabling. Actually I think any 8" drive could be made to work. Also, certain 3.5" drives, and of course JB's magic gizmo as well. They all did IBM format in those days, 360RPM, single (FM) or double (MFM) density.

There is a YD-174 manual here:

It is not clear from my reading of the manual how one might tell the drive whether it's getting 120 or 240 AC but it might be more obvious looking right at the drive. It definitely implies that ONE DRIVE can either be powered by 240 or 120, but I may have missed something. Bitsavers also may have a better manual. The one above seems truncated.

Perhaps Tony can indicate, or photograph, the wiring in the drive bays to confirm how the AC goes to the drives in his IIx setup. Otherwise perhaps Peter at horizontal can shed some light on the correct setup for 174s.

Cheers,
Joe
