DIY SolderMask

DIY SolderMask

2009-06-16 by Daniel Howard Bryant

I found this on ebay today:

ebay item #: 360156811112

it may be of interest to the group!

I've been looking around at solder mask, not that I would need it, but it sure would give a nice touch to PCB's I make.

The seller gives a description of a step by step process with photos.

If you guys wouldn't mind, may I have your opinions on it?

To me this product seems like the way for us homebrewers to easily add soldermask to our PCB's. Also, how many square inches would a tube of this size cover? And would it be possible to find this ink elsewhere, and how much might it cost?

Thanks in advance,
Daniel Bryant

That looks slick - his finished PCB has nice exposed solder pads, but the traces are still covered with green - how did he keep the traces covered with only the solder pads washed away? Q-tip to wash only pad?

I don't think it would do much for my boards functionly, but sure looks nice. Wish that was half price - I'd try it.

It seems a bit expensive for some UV curable paint $15 for 1/3 of an ounce,
but I guess that is what ebay is all about.
*"How did he keep the traces covered?" -- the same technique as exposing a
photsensitve resist. Expose and wash away anything that wasn't cured.
Remember this is a solvent system so good ventilation is needed. *

*I don't think anyone but in china would reccomend using gasoline to clean
the board.

I am sure he is buying it bulk and packaging it.
I do not have time to search just now but here is a place to start.

It seems the the UV coatings are becoming more popular. This is probably due
the to government air quality requirements regarding volatile organic
compounds (VOC).
A quick google shows that there are UV cure paints (coatings) being used on
furniture and autos.

They could be another source for a small sample.

I could not stop thinking about from what is made that soldermask. So i
asked the seller gently.

(my question)
hi, i was looking for soldermask and... found yours! But, sorry for
asking this, i am not convinced yet, soldermask are normally epoxy, and
yours seems to behave different. If the powerful lamp heats the board
all the epoxy will be cured.
Are this just part A epoxy (resin) with silkscreen sensiblizer? Or other
type of ink with sensiblizer? I ask because i have to know how long it
will last, if i can use it in various boards or if only has few days
self live. The necessary conditions for storage (light, temp, humidity).
Etc. Sorry if am asking to much. Very thanks, Simao

(answer)
Hi, Yes you are correct, it is UV epoxy. The lamp is provide light
energy and it is not advise you to bake or roast the PCB, only provide
bright light, you also do it under sun light or just leave it for indoor
lighting for 24hours.
This is not A+B epoxy.... so no need other type accelerator....
No.. It can last for 1year. in provide you are not put it under strong
light. It is better to put it in the drawer, complete dark storage area.
Regards, Raymond

UV ink used in outdoors and plastics is not that thick, and is even more
expensive. I still believes this is epoxy, but just part A (bisphenol
resin) it's said can cure alone in UV. I might try it, and might even
buy this (but epoxy glue is cheaper).

Anyone that paint iron, steel, wood etc use oil based things to clean
the brushes and so. Toluene, benzene, acetone etc are oil based.
Personally i have used much kerosene and nafta for cleaning brushes and
hands after painting. (BTW kerosene and cloth washing machine detergent
is a fantastic thing to wash paint, oil, grease etc from the hands).

For cleaning epoxy is acetone or even better acetic acid (vinegar),
acetone dilute epoxy in a way that can enter your blood stream, so use
gloves.

I think "sensitizer" is the word you are looking for?

Don't confuse UV -cured- polymer with UV -resistant- outdoor ink. Nothing similar.

I'm sure it is UV cured polymer/acrylic. It has been in use in the electronics industry for a long time, and has been used in the gift industry to make stickers.

And I see now for fingernails and a lot of other things.

They sell a UV epoxy but it looks expensive to me. About 8 oz for $30 and 16 oz for $50.

The question I have is what coverage per oz should one expect ?
Also this product is sold for doming and may be too thick.

Here is a company I found that markets the stuff, not sure of the price
for a small batch.

This page also has several guides and articles that can be downloaded
and read for more information.

Every LPI soldermask i know about uses resin and hardener.
There really is a type of epoxy 1 part only cured in UV or very hot
temperatures. The prices are about 45+ usd for 30ml, to 100+ usd for 1
gallon (or 15usd for 2oz as a surfboard glue). So the epoxy green
soldermask which originated the thread really seems a great deal.

I know the diference, but yes i ended mixing them in the line. Most
outdoors are printed in paper, and not with the ink i was writing about.

Yes! And sorry for my bad writing again. I should write less or use the
dictionary more often.

Hello,
It exist somme type off solder mask ink and some type off ink to print directly on the copper before ectching.

For this special ink you can go to "Lackewerke Peters"
http://www.peters.de/index_e.htm

To print directly on copper, the "ELPEMER SD2050uv" work very well.
Just applied with 99 mesh stencil, cure with UV, ectching, strip with alcalin média, and is finish.

This ink is use for big and low cost production.
http://www.peters.de/produkte_e/s2_0200000e_016.pdf

Or RC2054HR for UV exposable, use in yellom light room.

For solder mask, SD2467 SM-YG work very fine, very simple, applied with a 43 mesh stencil in yellow light room, just clean directly all tools after applied.

For 2 components, you can obtain the pack to prepare 1 kilo use ink, but, you can prepare the necessary quantities with an scales electronique in grammes, the proportion are 1 for 4, no problem, mix 10 minutes, wait still 10 minutes for air debuller and apply with screening.

Still 10 minutes, cure in ventillation oven: for simple face: 45 minutes max 80° centigrade.

For double face: the first face 15 minutes at 80°, let get cold, print the second face, cure 30 minutes et 80°, let get cold, make insolation in you UV normal process, exposure time is 3 or 4x long off normal exposure time (or test with STOUFFER game) , developement in alcalin media, (température is critique), rinc with water, cure at 140° centigrade 70 minutes, and is finish.
All in yellow ligth room, absolutly.

Best injoy in production.

Old thread but I have to thank you for the link. One part only, uv cured
soldermask and 'silkscreen' (legend layer) is something i really look
for one year ago.

You seem to use it in a daily basis :)
I wonder if it works with a simple laser/ink jet printed film, or is
mandatory high contrast photoplotter films (maybe depends on uv
intensity). Is only available in big quantities but good thing to know
about. Thanks!
