Disposing of Etchant.

Disposing of Etchant.

2010-02-26 by Jachin

I am planning to follow one of recipes for making copper etchant from hydrochloric acid, and was wondering how I should dispose of the used etchant? I know that there are methods for refreshing the etchant for reuse, but I am still at the process debugging stage and storing the used etchant for long periods is not feasible. The formula I was going to use is the one posted in this groups Files directory.

How long is "long periods" ? Mine's been sitting on my workbench for
two years now, and I have some used FeCl that I got years before that.

I would not want the stuff to be around for more than a week. I am working in borrowed lab space, and I don't want to take up too much space. That being said I am only making boards that are 2x2, and it might take a while to accrue significant(< .5 liter ) amounts of the leftover etchant. Do you have plans to replenish the used FeCL?

FeCl keeps for a long time.

You can add some Baking Soda leave it open til it dries up then seal it up in something and throw it away. You are talking about a very small amount.
