Laser engraver using an XMOS XK-1

Laser engraver using an XMOS XK-1

2010-03-01 by Leon Heller

I'm heavily involved with XMOS chips, and this laser engraver is a nice
use for the little XK-1 board:

It's probably got some PCB applications.

I've had good luck laser engraving Thermark (www.thermark.com) for a PCB
soldermask. It leaves a permanent glass-like surface on the PCB.

High powered non enclosed laser like that laser while cool isn't
recommended. Chance of laser reflection would be high.

Lasers have come down in price. We sell the basic model for $1495:

Henry,
That sounds interesting, how sharp are the lines and how thin a line size can you go. How do you remove the glass like coating for soldering. If you have any pictures of a finished board that will be good.

I tried .5mm (~20mil) lines and it wasn't a problem. Maybe I could go
smaller but would need to spend more time focusing and not sure if it would
stick.

It could not be removed that is why I suggested using it as a solder mask.

No pics at this time.
