i think that playing guitar without any beat always leads to timing inconsistencies. its ok if its just guitar and voice, but I don't think its good to try to make the drums follow a solo guitar part. I suspect that what happens in a band, is that each player makes micro adjustments in timing to stay tight. so when i said to make a scratch track, i didn't mean to use that as a master rhythm track. I might take the best bar of the verse and then isolate it, and get a drum pattern to fit it. and note the tempo. then do the same for the chorus. If the tempos were like 108 and 112 I would probably make the whole song 110. Once I've gotten the timing and feel that come from raw playing, then I would expand out the drums to make the song. then record guitar again, to the new drums which are tempo tight and not wavering bar to bar.
