Great post! Thanks for the tips.

I also have one to add. The sound of the synth used as a modulator  
has a big effect on intelligibility also. A buzzy saw usually does  
well but for me this can be improved a lot by mixing some white noise  
in with the saw. It really helps to voice vocal formants.
