Since the downstroke usually is louder on string instruments I¹d make a velocity switch thing. Now, I could be making an ass of myselfe because I honestly don¹t know how a hammer dulcimer is played....So take it for what it is, it¹s what I usually do with strummed samples. When playing a 16th note pattern on a key I usually end up with higher velocity values on even notes and lower values on odd. So it works out great for the most part, and if not it¹s real easy to grab notes in the matrix editor and tweak.
