Strumming EXS Instrument

Strumming EXS Instrument

2007-03-20 by Gregory

I've got some hammer dulcimer samples that I want to use as an EXS24
instrument. In terms of playability, I'm wondering what y'all
suggest for mapping the strums. I have up and down strums for major
and minor chords, as in:

A Up
A Down
Am Up
Am Down

It makes sense to use one end of the keyboard map for major and
another for minor, but what do I do with the up and down strums? It
seems mapping them to different octaves would make it impossible to
play a realistic strumming pattern.

Any thoughts?

Gregory

Since the downstroke usually is louder on string instruments I¹d make a
velocity switch thing. Now, I could be making an ass of myselfe because I
honestly don¹t know how a hammer dulcimer is played....So take it for what
it is, it¹s what I usually do with strummed samples. When playing a 16th
note pattern on a key I usually end up with higher velocity values on even
notes and lower values on odd. So it works out great for the most part, and
if not it¹s real easy to grab notes in the matrix editor and tweak.

Just my two öre,

Erik
