I think that might be some type of feedback loop. As soon as I upgraded to 
Logic 8, and would go to record, I would get a bunch of feedback even though the 
input track was muted. I think they changed some features or set some 
different defaults. If you look at the channel strip there is not just M for mute and 
R for record, but also I and something else. (I am not at Logic now). It 
could be that your monitoring the input, and its making a feedback loop. If there 
is a slight delay it would sound like a reverb, or it might make noise or 
distortion too.
