I'm not familiar with the Tascam FW, but Logic should already know  
how many inputs there are coming in from the device.  What I have  
done in the past to figure out which inputs are which is to create a  
channel strip for each input, arm them all to record, then plug the  
instrument or mic into different physical inputs on the interface  to  
see which channel strip is showing a signal.

That's really to do in L8.  Just create a new song via the  "empty  
project" template from the "Explore" template folder.  It will ask  
how many audio strips.  Enter more than you have inputs for, then  
check "Ascending" for the inputs.  Then when you go to the  
environment page, you will have a channel strip for each input on  
your device.
