logic / tascam help

logic / tascam help

2008-12-27 by Shaun Liddell

Hello Folks,

I have recently moved to mac after using a roland 2480. Thing is I bought a tascam fw so I could do this - all seems to work ok er - ish. Totally new to this; I have no problem getting mike signal to record - it's the guitar that wont go in. I need to know the basics - ie - How do I get it to record on a certain input - the manual is hopeless if you have a mac, and as far as I can see tells you nothing about what to do to route a signal. Got mike in xlr 1 -

tried guitars in various - oh yeah- it worked once - total fluke though. Anyone got a walk through step by step for British idiot???

I'm not familiar with the Tascam FW, but Logic should already know
how many inputs there are coming in from the device. What I have
done in the past to figure out which inputs are which is to create a
channel strip for each input, arm them all to record, then plug the
instrument or mic into different physical inputs on the interface to
see which channel strip is showing a signal.

That's really to do in L8. Just create a new song via the "empty
project" template from the "Explore" template folder. It will ask
how many audio strips. Enter more than you have inputs for, then
check "Ascending" for the inputs. Then when you go to the
environment page, you will have a channel strip for each input on
your device.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like you're saying either/both that you're unsure where the inputs can be
assigned in the Logic user interface screen, OR which input corresponds to where you
plug in your guitar cable.

The input/ouptut assingments for each channel are seen above the fader for each
instrument. There will be a little button with "off" written (that's the automation setting).
Then just above that are the input/output, with the input on top.

If you're unsure what channel is the appropriate input for your guitar. Make a New
Session, with an Empty Session, create 8 new audio instruments, and assign the first two
#1 input with "ascending" checked. Record arm all. Open up the mixer window and as
you play the guitar you will probably see which input was the correct one for the guitar. If
not, keep assigning inputs (in sequential banks of 8) until you find the winner.

The last thing it might be is a setting in the Tascam. For my MBox I have to identify the
input as a line input before it's recognized by the interface, and then by Logic/Pro Tools.

Pete
