Mike,
How was the sound quality using the Mac's soundcard? The reason I'm asking is this:
I just recently bought an Apogee Ensemble, doing an upgrade from a
Duet. The Ensemble has the latest firmware and works flawlessly in
Logic. I'll actually be using a MacBook w/ the Duet for the gigs but
wanted to try MS out on my studio system first.
I opened MS and selected the Rock template. I hit a key on my keyboard
and the acoustic piano patch played perfectly - thru my iMac speaker. I
went into Preferences and selected the Ensemble for Audio input and
output. I hit a note on my keyboard and got a loud clicking noise over
the sound of the (quiet) note. I changed the buffer from 128 to 512 samples and
it got worse. I chose the internal speaker again and it played with no
problem.
I turned AirPort off, closed all other apps, rebooted, opened MS and
chose a blank template. The EP that was present played okay, altho very
quiet. I re-opened the Rock template and got the same clicking noise. I
closed MS, reset the Ensemble, opened Logic and it worked fine. It also
works fine w/ iTunes.
I've got to assume I have something set wrong somewhere. I've yet to try it with the MacBook + Duet, but if I have the same problem it would be good to know that the output from the iMac will sound good enough for a gig. I'll be doing basic classic rock (B-3, Steinway, Rhodes, Moog lead, pads) with 1, possibly 2 controller keyboards.

Doug,
I put my Mac on a music stand, one of those heavy duty ones that has knobs you can tighten, and tilted it back enough so that I could see the screen. It was fairly bright out, so I needed to lean in to see the screen clearly.
If I'd taken my firewire interface, that wouldn't have worked so well, but I just took a 1/8" to 1/4" cord from the Mac headphone output (1/8") to a direct box (1/4") and from there to the PA.
