Re: to upgrade or not

Re: to upgrade or not

Wow! Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like this might be a great
little forum.

As for upgrading, I think I am going to sit tight for a while. My old
g4 dual 800 is working perfectly with OS X 10.3.4 as is Logic 6.4.2.
I can load 6 or 7 instances of EWQLSO Gold on Kompakt and still have
some room for effects. I rarely have any glitches or crashes. And I
have a P4 3.0 Ghz PC with 3 Gigs of RAM sync'd to the Mac. On it, I
run both Giga Orchestra and VSTack with Kontakt on it, so it can take
a fair bit of the load off of the Mac when necessary.

One of the draw backs of my older G4 is its 1.5 Gig RAM limitation.
Someone suggested getting 1 gig strips, but I don't think the number
of slots is the problem as much as the limitation of the system and
bus speed. It says in the manual that 1.5 Gigs is the max for these
older G4s. Anyone know different?

It will be 6 months to a year before I can afford to upgrade to a dual
G5, so I think I will wait and do the Logic upgrade then as well.
Hopefully by then they will have most of the bugs worked out!

Running EWQLSO Gold on a PC and Logic on my Mac?

2004-12-21 by Kamm Schreiner

Is it possible to run EWQLSO Gold on one of my spare PCs and have my Mac
sequence it? EWQLSO is a huge memory hog and it sure would be nice to
offload that to one of my spare PCs.

Yamaha to buy Steinberg

2004-12-21 by Kamm Schreiner

Has anyone seen the news that Yamaha is going to buy Steinberg?

One of the reasons I switched from Sonar to Logic is because I think that
Apple is determined to be the "the" media company and as result, I suspect
that Logic will become the "Standard". However, Yamaha has one heck of a
good history in this respect too. Any thoughts on how this may shape the
music industry in the next few years?

Steinberg is owned by Pinnacle. Does this mean Yamaha is buying Pinnacle
or just the Steinberg wing of it?

From what I can gather, there is going to be some royalty free
cross-licensing between Pinnacle and Yamaha and that it is basically the
Steinberg products that Yamaha is buying.

You can run EWQLSO Gold either in Kompakt or Kontakt in stand alone
mode on a PC and sequence it from Logic on your Mac. That's what I
do. Only in stand alone mode, you can only open 1 instance at a time
(if you try to open 2 or more instances, it will crash your soundcard
and sometimes even your OS). Therefore I bought V-STack and now I can
open several instances of EWQLSO Gold as a VST on the PC. (I also run
Giga Studio 3 Orchestra on the same PC.) I can get 7 instances of
Kompakt open easily on my old G4 so between the 2 computers, I have
more samples than I need which is great.

Right now I am using an audio and MIDI interface on each machine but I
would like to use a network for the midi. I downloaded the demo of
MIDoverLAN, but so far I haven't gotten it to work. Still dickin'
with it . . .

Thanks. That is great news. EWQLSO really slows down my iMac which was
pretty darn slow to start with. (Starting Logic is an exercise in patience,
especially when there are EWQLSO samples to be loaded for the current song.)
Now I need to look at how EWQLSO is licensed to see if it can be installed
on both my Mac and my PC. Or if I need to uninstall it from my Mac in order
to use it from my PC.

With EWQLSO you can install it on 2 machines though you are supposed
to only use it on one at a time. I wonder how they enforce that rule ? :)
After that, you have to de-activate the license on a machine before
you can install it on a different computer. Apparantely once you
deactivate it on a computer you can never install it on that computer
again (according to the license notes at nativeinstruments.de)
