Imported .wav files don't play back in original tempo, but faster

Imported .wav files don't play back in original tempo, but faster

2005-08-04 by Michael Sirotta

I'm having a problem working with imported .wav files (in L7). These files play normally in
other audio apps such as Quicktime, but when imported to a Logic audio track, the tempo
of the audio playback doubles (or faster, perhaps), so that recorded audio sounds like a
tape playing in fast forward or rewind speeds. Adjusting the tempo of the sequencer has
no effect on this.

I can't seem to find a way to fix this in Logic. There is the workaround of converting .wavs
outside of Logic and importing as aiffs or mp3's. That seems to work, but it's more
arduous. Can anyone shed any light on why this may be, and is there any way in Logic to
adjust the 'tempo' of audio sample playback?

Hi Michael. Check your sample rate. If they're playing fast then
you need to change the sample rate in the Audio menu to match
whatever the waves are at. Chances are the wavs are in 48 and your
project is in 44.1. Or vice versa, my brain's fried. There's also
the option when you import them to convert the waves to the sample
rate your project is in.

I never had this problem. Could it be that they were not recorded at the standard 44.1mhz and instead at 22mhz or something, and then logic is trying to play them back at 44.1? That would make them twice as fast. Check the Logic preferences for that. And if you can get them to play correctly do Copy/Convert to get them in the format you want.

The sequencer speed never affects audio playback. So thats normal.

Thanks, all. Actually I had figured it out before your reply (before 2:00 AM my time! zzzz)
The original wavs were recorded at a 22 mhz rate. After much searching through the
reference pdf's, I finally found the sample rate conversion tool (in the audio sample editor,
the window that shows the waveform - a menu item there). That did the trick.

Thanks again.
