Vocal effects

2007-02-16 by Joel Falconer

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this list. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks. I'm
the lead singer and songwriter of my band Midnight.Haulkerton. I also
do most of the recording at home on my extreme budget--a Mac mini
using only the built in line in with a Behringer Eurorack and a MIDI
keyboard are my methods of getting sound into the box. I use Logic
Express 7.

I've been working on a new recording and trying to achieve a
particular effect on the vocals that I can't seem to quite get. I'm
going for the Lenny Kravitz-style phasey/spacey voice, but I can't
seem to get the right settings. Anyone have any idea how to get this
kind of effect going?

I know, I'm a newb, but that's why I joined :)

Thanks everyone!

What song by Lenny Kravitz?

Did you try a phase shifter or flanger?

I listened to your song Fire of Desire. Your voice sounds very pro - it
reminds me of someone famous in fact, but I can't put my finger on it. However, the
backing tracks don't go with the voice very well. It goes from being too
frilly with the harpsichord to overly distorted. The drums are ok, but could be
beefed up and made a little more sophisticated.

I think I would recommend just recording a single guitar as the backing to
start. Your voice is kind of earthy and has an authentic rock/blues sound to it.
And its good. But it seems there is a mish mash with the instrumentation.

I was learning Reason when I made that song. I know, best not to
publish your tutorials :P The harpsichord is actually a steel-string
acoustic, so that tells me something about the quality of Reason's
built in samples. These "Tunebacks" as we call them aren't really
representative of the band's sound. They are more experimental.
Thanks for the advice--I will look at what I can do with the
instruments to make it more fitting.

I tried Express' built in phaser and flanger, but I think it was more
the settings I couldn't get right, which I'm also learning. I spent
the last six months learning how to pump out a song. Now I'm learning
how to get the finer details right. I'll keep playing with the phaser
and flanger.

The songs I was thinking of are (and these are the only two I've
actually listened to, so I thought it was his signature voice) "If I
Could Fall In Love" and another one with a similar effect, which I
never knew the name of.

Logic's flanger and phaser are ok, but there are better ones. There are plugs
you can buy which might be better sounding. I think nomadfactory used to make
some free ones that you might try.

The method of putting together a song is not a trivial one. Its easy enough
to throw a loop on, and loop it infinitely then play to that. Or you can play
live, but the time will be all to hell.

Can you play guitar and maybe just record that to a separate track? You can
then use parts of it, or none of it, or all of it.

You might also be referring to a bit of slap back
reverb/delay. Your Logic Tape Delay is pretty decent
for that, just wind back on a preset and see how it
sounds with a little flange as well. If it's what I'm
thinking you're talking about a pretty 70's sounding
funk vocal.
