true portable setup? (g4 1.67 GHz & 1 GB ram)?

2007-04-14 by tvlogic

i have a Powerbook G4 (1.67 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM).
with this computer, is it honestly possible to use several plugins, VSTs, etc to do a full
production (recording mostly 2 tracks at a time) but mixing 20-30?
if so, what else is necessary? a PCMICA card for an extra-FireWire port? how many external
hard drives? (one for samples? one for audio?)...
let me know who is successfully doing kickin' productions w/ this current set up-- using
their G4 powerbook as their only CPU.
thanks.

Sure you can do it all "in the box". Some of the top pro's, record everything
to analog tape or use Dangerous Audio summing buss because they feel the
analog feel gives it a better sound. But I consider those options to be too
expensive. Logic has everything you need, although of course, there are plenty of
extra plugs which many of us prefer. For example, PSP's Vintage Warmer. If you
are only recording two tracks at a time in, then you can mix in the computer,
and output a single audio file. You don't need an external mixer for that.

Hey there, I have a PowerBook G4 1.67GHz (now with 2
Gigs of RAM.)
I'll tell you about a work-flow that I've adopted...

I have 2 Lacie Porche Drives daisy-chained and I try
to split my media on them when I start a project. Keep
in mind that your Freeze Files cannot be "split up"
though...
I am currently finishing a project that is 36 tracks
(with a few tracks bussing out for some common fx
etc.) This is definitely taxing on my PowerBook.
Because I Freeze almost every track, my Firewire drive
has been running into the red. This project is
possibly pushing my system to the limit as is, but
there is a cool way to lighten the load.
After I was happy with the basic tracks and sounds of
instruments and arrangment, I created a NEW project
where I bounced groups of common tracks like say, the
"string pads" to a stereo file. My "bass instruments"
to a stereo bounced file, drum mix (minus the snare or
kick etc,) to a stereo file etc...
I then import them into this new project. Once there,
I can now "finish" mixing with overall compresson,
editing, or other fx... and my 1.67GHz processor is
happy and my FireWire Drives are grinning ear to ear.
: )

This work-flow has been a good one for me. Hope this
helps you with yours! Good luck! : )

charlie
