I don't think there is an upgrade price from 7... Notice that Logic Studio is HALF the price of Logic Pro 7.... Once you put it on the shopping cart, it says "Logic Studio Upgrade from Logic Platinum/Gold 5,6,7". I don't think there'll be any price cuts, since $499 full and $199 upgrade are good prices, compared to what it was before. Marcelo

Actually, the side of my Logic Studio box says "Upgrade from 5, 6 or 7". -Michele

Not worth it.
Definitely not worth it.
They are simply just trying to have something new on the line for Logic to accompany the new iMacs, the new iPods Touch, and even the prices for the iPhones are going down.
Don't buy. They are just trying to sell.
If you want to be smart continue using Logic 7 - it's great, and in terms of new technologies wait for the multi touch iMac. that would be something for us musicians.
Logic 8 is money thrown away.

Same price for upgrade from 7. They're just calling it Logic Pro. When I click on "purchase" I get the following upgrade info: Upgrade from Logic Pro or Logic Platinum/Gold 5 or 6 $199.00 I think that's roughly what the upgrade to Pro was. Great deal for L5 and L6 owners though. And the "new" price is impressively small. First the iPhone and now Logic Studio - they seem to be lowering prices on everything at Apple. I smell a Trojan horse. Gregory On Sep 12, 2007, at 3:36 PM, GAmoore@... wrote: > What is the upgrade price from Logic 7? they have give an upgrade > price > of $199 from Logic 5 or 6. everything they are selling now is just low in price, because they will probably create a new operating system for the multi touch technologies, so everyone will get a big SORRY in their face.
Let's suppose they will keep OS X, or any other native Mac OS, the old macs, mac book pros, etc. will become useless.
In terms of logic, wait to see what they will charge for the Logic Multi Touch.
There is no Trojan horse there, is it? We will all be hurting our pockets if we want to "KEEP UP" with the industry. Right?
Be smart. Understand the market.
Don't buy. That way they will introduce the real good stuff sooner. They will get the point. The point is:
WE ARE NOT INTERESTED.

What an arrogant A-hole. Just because the upgrade is not right for YOU, doesn't mean it's not totally amazing for other people. Wake up, your not the center of the universe. While the sound engine and other major fatures might not have improved a lot, for me the Mainstage feature and a better audio editing interface are worth the $200. I use Logic to play live, and tipically I would rewire Logic tracks to Live because of the good control I had in their interface. Now, apparently, that can be done within Logic. My opinion only.

What exactly does Mainstage do? Is that just the unified arrange window? I am a bit dissapointed - especially after waiting several years for an major improvement - only to get a very minimal upgrade, and be asked to pay 40% of the full price - after spending $1500 or more over the years on upgrades. Couldn't they throw in a new instrument, an improved busing scheme, etc? ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Well, one of the things that I remember people asking for on the LUG was for a simpler interface more like ProTools. They've simplified the interface by having the one window to do most of your work in (or if you want - you can still use screensets). Better take management was another thing that was requested on the lists too. They've delivered there also and the quick-swipe comping looks great. Sample- accurate editing in the arrange window, snap-to-transient selection, etc. is also an improvement. Now, AU effects can be used on Nodes too. There is additional content from samples and sounds to loops. Also, Mainstage is completely new and they've thrown in a better audio editor with Soundtrack Pro too. Mainstage is, I believe, a little bit like Brainspawn's Forte (for the PC) which you can use as a live performance rack hosting your AU instruments with plugin effects. If I'm not mistaken Mainstage can process live inputs too (although I'm not positive - lots to read right now). There's also the surround stuff, but I'm with the others on that one - I don't currently work in surround so it doesn't provide much benefit to me. I don't know, but to me, it looks like there is a lot of value for the $199 upgrade price. These things just might not have much value for you and that is fine. I do not see it really as a minimal upgrade. Re-working the interface probably took some time even though the improvements are seen in workflow. While maybe there aren't new instruments or an improved bussing scheme, improved workflow is a big one IMHO that can save lots of time (time is money right?). Anyway, to each their own. My upgrade is already ordered. Fernstudio

I drove the few miles to the apple store when I heard the news and Im enjoying my new software. This is not a minor upgrade. Too many improvements beyond those shown on the apple site to list. I think they have been listening to user groups and their customers. Not many new plugs but a lot of the little fixes and work flow improvements that make apple software just better. No dongle and running on my powerbook and dual 1.8 G5 with no issues. They have thrown in quite a bit. I would review more carefully the information on the Apple site, there are numerous performance enhancements and content additions. Whether those are worth the nominal upgrade price *to you* is subjective, but I know plenty who have already ordered their upgrades and full versions. As many of us know Logic Pro comes with a lot of things that the other software daws didn't have but the price of Logic Pro was so much more than the other software daws that it made it hard to market the software even though it includes a lot in it. As for the changes I think they made that to accomodate the newbies that are venturing out into music production with Logic and to challenge some of the other major softwares that have a more simple vibe to them like Ableton Live. Sometimes when a newbie is starting out we don't know where to start. At first Logic was a little intimidating because it has so many features that you don't know how to use that you can feel overwhelmed. I think Apple listened to the users and made changes that they feel will increase the chances of people using their software for productions. I am curious, cautious, and excited about the new Logic Pro 8. I'm leaning towards upgrading. Hi Gregory and all, > What exactly does Mainstage do? Is that just the unified arrange window? As far as I can tell (and those already using L8 can correct me), it is a tool geared to performance, more than mixing/arranging. It seems from the videos and description that you can have the set of parameters you'd like mapped to whatever knobs you want. It resembles Live's control panels. You can see your knobs, sliders, and pedals in action, and other information about the patch you're using. Furthermore, as a guitar player, for instance, you can have your effects switches and knobs on the screen and toggle/manipulate themm from a control surface of a floor board controller. I don't know if you need to have Logic running behind it or if you can create tracks/patches and open them as channel strips in the mixer to the right of the Mainstage window. If it can run separate from Logic, therefore not biting too much memory, it's certainly a highly valuable tool. The clumsiness of Logic when it comes to live performance was a common complain, and I guess Apple has paid some serious attention to that. Especially when Live 5 came out and it could do it 100 better than Logic. Actually, that's what I was doing, using Logic's synths but controlling everything from Live, at great CPU expense. Perhaps I won't need that anymore?? :) Marcelo
