Good set of headphones?

Good set of headphones?

2007-09-13 by Alan Haskel

Hello, I was looking at a few different forums to get
some ideas on getting a good solid pair of headphones
for mixing and late night composing. I've read AKG and
Sennheiser, but I don't really know the model numbers
or those brands. Can anyone suggest a good pair of
headphones?

Thanks,

Alan

I was wondering about good headphones too. I had some AKG 240s but they
wore out after a few years.

Lately, I have been fairly happy with some wireless headphones I got
off of Amazon for $70 or so. The fidelity is acceptable but its very
convenient to move back and forth from the computer to pick up a guitar
across the room without wires tangling or banging against the guitar as
you record. Then when the tracking is done, I turn them off, and turn on
the monitor speakers again.

Alan,

I'm looking at some Beyerdynamic sets to replace various
older, less-than-great-shape phones.

Their mics sound great (or at least the one that I have), and
their headphones are modular: Cables, pads, etc., are replaceable.

I hate tossing things because one aspect has died.

AKG K240 - mixing- a bit more accurate,

Sennheiser HD280 Pro - composing- sounds great, comfy, and LOUD.

I own a pair of both. I find myself using the K240's a lot, but I use
the HD280's for monitoring during vocals, they leak a lot less and I
can hear myself.

FYI most of Sennheiser's components are replaceable as well... at
least in the Pro phones...

Hi Alan,

I use both Sennheiser HD580 and Sony 7509HD (they sound different to each
other, but I guess it's always good to check both before doing that final
mix on main speakers).

Best,

Andy

Thanks Andy, and everyone who's responded. This beats walking into
Guitar Center blind.

Those are way, way too fragile! A mate has those and in a year and a half of
everyday use nearly all plastic parts are broken. Mind you, he is
_extremely_ careful with his equipment. My 10-year-old HD580 are built like
a tank and still work fine (knock on wood).

Best,

Andy

Well my studio headphones I only use when i'm recording something-
but I have a set that I use for DJ-ing live that took a beating but
they managed to hold up quite well-I was constantly twisting the cups
DJ-style, the cord would be a mess, etc... I guess I was lucky- they
work fine... : )

I have 3 pair of the HD280s, and mine have held up well too. I use
them only a couple times a week, but they're always on the floor or
tangled in a pile of cables, so it can't be said that I've been easy
on them.

They have some of the best sound isolation because of the padding and
tight fit. I find them not too comfortable after extended use, but
way better than my Sonys that were always killing my ears after 40
minutes. Lighter headphones are comfortable for longer, but let in
too much ambient noise for me.

Depending on your needs, the HD280 is a good buy.

I've used a pair of AKG K240 for the longest time and
they've been great. The K240DF, although more
expensive, are supposed to be even better.
