Rhythmic Synth Stuff??

Rhythmic Synth Stuff??

2008-04-15 by pete_buchwald

Hey Guys,

I just attended a class and the instructor showed us how you can use the Reason
Maelstrom, via Re-wire to play Rhythmic Synth sounds. I just looked through all the Logic
synths to see if there was an equivelant ... not really, from what I'm seeing. Anybody do
groovy rhythmic synth stuff??

Please share the hidden logic secret.

I'm not talking about side-chain, filter, vocoder .... etc stuff.

Electronic Musician magazine and David Crowder Band recordings got me interested in
this:

     Thanks,

         Pete

By "rhythmic" I mean it's locked to the Logic/Pro Tools ruler.

I discovered that crystal (free synth from Green Oak) has a few patches that do this. And I
guess I can use ... maelstrom via re-wire. Just seems like these killer Logic synths would
have some good rythmic patches that lock to my session tempo.

Thanks,

     Pete

I use simple midi "grooves". I use the matrix window to create
rhythmic patterns. Insert an instrument then loop the track. I use
crystal this way as well. I agree that Crystal is an excellent free
soft-synth but i get excellent results with logic synths.

Have a look at the vector tab of es2, if you can master it you can get great rhythmical
filter/wavetable/ring modulating goodness.

i believe the ES2 matrix will do this. Also Absynth, Blue, FM7, etc. I assume you mean that their arp clocks are sync'ed to logic's tempo - including tempo changes.

There are many cool ways to do this in Logic. You can use tempo-locked
LFOs. You can draw automation curves for various synth parameters and
quantize them. You can put a gate after a synth patch and
quantize-automate it as well. I use CamelAudio's CamelSpace to
accomplish this more directly.

You can use Ultrabeat as a tempo-locked synth as well.

I also use 3rd-party synths with strong arpeggiator/sequencers, like
Zebra and Papen Blue.
