Gawd. These people need to get a life. They've already said it's
coming out this year.

Will our software run on it? That's the important question.

Actually what Im concerned about, is my hardware going to run on it
hehehe.
I fear my good old G4/800 quicksilver maybe nearing the end of its
lifeline..
At least as far as the stock config is concerned.. Ive already read
that Tiger requires a 64MB graphics card, which Im not about to go drop
$2-300 just to get a newer ATI 9000 or 8500. Whether that was true or
not guess we wont know for a bit longer..

I've been thinking about spending some of my weekend
setting up an external boot drive and installing my
ADC Tiger seed on it. I'll let you know how logic
handles once I've got things working (or not).

I should rephrase my important question: Will our software be adapted
to take advantage of 64-bit memory addressing?

The bells and whistles - and the fact that I don't remember any of
the upcoming features means that they must be bells and whistles
rather than must-haves - don't have me waiting with bated breath.
Being able to load an entire orchestral template on one machine does.

It seems like Apple is always overhyping their stuff. I recall them running tv ads 1.5 years ago saying that they had the first 64 bit processor and it was so powerful it could not be exported to certain countries. And now we're still waiting for that integration. In the same way, OS X was supposed to have all these great features, and never crashes (it does), easier to maintain (it isn't), faster (most definitely not), etc. And going further back, when the powerpc came out 1994, they had to re-write the OS (I think it was 7.5)... but years later in 8 and 9 they were still talking about 68000 code that was just then being converted to PowerPC code.

By the way, I saw one site with a rumor that 3.0 g G5's will be announced next week. We might know tomorow.

Looking at the developer docs, I'd say no, at least
not initially. While the Tiger core is 64 bit aware,
many of the apple-provided libraries intended for use
by developers are not yet 64 bit, meaning that any app
which uses them also must remain 32 bit. Most notable
are the interface libraries. Basically, any 64 bit
application with a gui must either include a
completely custom gui with no quartz or cocoa
components, or else they must break their gui into a
separate application and then communicate gui inputs
to another, headless, 64-bit application via some form
of interprocess communication. Much of the logic gui
does appear to be totally custom, but dialogs and
preference panes and such look to be cocoa. Short of
rebuilding all of those components, or breaking them
out into separate apps, logic is going to stay 32 bit
until apple gets their act together and rebuilds all
their libraries for Tiger.

The only apps that will take adavantage of 64 bit
addressing initially will be 'server' apps which run
entirely in the background and communicate with a user
via config files and such. It will be useful for 3d
renderers, data visualization, databases, things of
that nature. Once apple finishes the 64 bit
transition (hopefully in a tiger point release, not OS
XI), everything else will be able to take advantage.

Then who cares when it comes out.

Well you would be missing out on widgets and searchlight. I don't think you will be productive at all without those new things. ;-)

None of the rumor sites say anything about faster G5's or lower prices on G5's (except on guy who speculated about it based on some lowering of prices). I am hoping for a 3.0 G5, then I'll pick up a midrange 2.5. I made this mistake before.... when the speeds hovered around 400 mhz for a few years, and finally I bought, then the speeds took off exponentially. We've been on this plateau a while now.
